J.C. has a very low unemployment rate. Last time I checked it was around 3.5%. Here is a link to some of the industries and size of the companies here in Washington County.

Hope this helps!

Well I guess it depends on what those "things" are. Cookeville is closer to Nashville, closer to Chattanooga, closer to a major airport, closer to Fall Creek Falls (state's most popular state park), Dale Hollow, Center Hill, historic Rugby, Cumberland Trail...

But the Tri Cities is definitely bigger and has more jobs.

Sorry I should have been clearer about what "things" are. I meant grocery stores, home improvement store (even if it's a local hardware store), restaurants. South Florida is very built up and there are lots of stores, retaurants, malls within close proximity. That certainly has its advantages, but it also makes for a heck of a lot of traffic. I want to get away from the overpopulation, but don't want to completely give up some of the convenience of living in a more populated area. I know I'm asking for the best of both worlds which is rarely possible. I have no problem driving 30-45 minutes to get to stores (other than grocery).

Well, Cookeville has Lowe's, Sam's Club, Belk, Sears, JCPenney, TJMaxx, Old Navy, Petco, Staples, Office Max, Kohl's, KMart, two Wal-Mart SuperCenters, Red Lobster, Ruby Tuesday, Outback, Starbucks, Chili's, Applebee's, Cheddar's, and on and on.

One of the things people like about Cookeville is that it's a small town (less than 30,000 in the city) but has the shopping, restaurants, night life, etc., of a much larger town. And it's only an hour from the Nashville airport.

Thanks for the info about Cookeville. I'm going to research it online. It's really hard to decide between Middle Tennessee and East Tennessee. I'm planning on taking a trip up to Tennessee and doing a driving tour, so to speak, of the areas that I'm interested in. My plan is stay on local roads so I can go through the towns, although I don't know how feasible that is. I'm not even sure if I can do Middle and East Tennessee in one trip because it seems like a long way from Nashville to Johnson City.

Wow! It sounds like Tennessee is the place to be. My family also lives in Florida and we are planning to move to the Nashville area this summer. We can't handle the high insurance and property taxes here. I am going to miss the weather though.

I agree with you about the missing the weather. It's a beautiful 80 degree day here (a little overcast). As I look at the weather for the Johnson City area and it's 36 degrees all I can think is COLD.

For what it's worth, there is a theory that the cold isn't quite as cold here as it is in Florida. In fact, there's a thread going on this very forum to that effect, you might want to check it out as I'm of the opinion that there is some validity to that concept...

I'm familiar with this theory and have read the thread on the forum. I'm not convinced yet that this theory is true.

Default Goodbye South Florida, Hello Tennessee!

I think most South Floridians are in the same boat with you, looking to get out of here!!! Have you heard any good tips on location in E. Tennessee?
