WSMV TV in Nashville is reporting that dozens of companies in 2008 expanded or launched new projects in East Tennessee, leaving West Tennessee dry with high unemployment rates. An example of this is the expansion of Averett Express Inc. to create 1,250 jobs in Cookeville.

That's the first I've heard of Averitt Express's plans to create 1,250 jobs in Cookeville. I know Averitt (misspelled in the article) has expanded quite a bit and opened a large new office building in Cookeville this past year, but 1,250 new jobs?

That article has other mistakes besides misspelling Averitt. It says Hemlock Semiconductor's new plant is in West Tennessee. Clarksville is most certainly not in West Tennessee.

The article also says,

Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development reported that 15,432 new projects and expansions were announced in 2008...

Then in the next paragraph it says,

The majority of the employment opportunities were in East Tennessee, where some 41 projects and expansions were predicted...

41 is not a majority of 15,432.

Regardless, it's an interesting article and certainly is good news for those looking for jobs in East Tennessee and, apparently, Cookeville (although I still think that figure of 1,250 jobs is off).

Not to nitpick (honest), but the way that is written makes it sound like Cookeville is in East Tennessee. The part about Cookeville was in a paragraph noting expansion in Middle Tennessee.

That's very true. It did sound like Cookeville was lumped with East Tennessee although the article does finally say that Cookeville is in Middle Tennessee.

If the article had correctly put the big Hemlock Semiconductor announcement in Clarksville to Middle Tennessee instead of West Tennessee, I wonder if that would boost Middle Tennessee's economic growth profile ahead of East Tennessee's?

I do feel sorry for West Tennessee, though.

I saw the actually newscast. The story was basically that East Tennessee was doing better at the moment at job growth (or job retention) than the rest of the state. They also made a point of pointing out that this didn't indicate a trend, just the recent situation. If these are good companies to work for, and good jobs, then I'm happy that East Tennessee has gotten them.

Yes, West Tennessee has always been the "poor stepsister".

This is stuff we more or less already knew. Middle and East TN have always been ahead of West TN on just about everything, especially growth.
