Exactly, there's really no point to do it in Memphis when half the city lives in the county anyway and doesn't have to have it done. I've waited MINIMUM an hour in line, and that's first thing in the moring in the middle of the month. Usually it takes much longer. And they say you should not run the A/C while you wait, since apparently that causes the toxins to accumulate and they might turn you away for 'smoking' inside the building (which is what happened to me), but come on....it's 100 degrees out in the summer, and they want us to wait in line, in the sun, in a hot car for 2 hours?! It's ridiculous.

In Memphis, the inspection is free, but the tags cost an arm and a leg.

In Nashville the emission inspection fee is $10. The wait is generally not too bad; this year it took me about 15 minutes.

Really, there are no car inspections? I'm used to the once a year hold-your-breath inspection that results in needing new tires/brakes/lights by the end of the month.
I can't speak for all of East TN, but for Greene County (Greeneville) and Washington County (Johnson City, Jonesborough), there are no inspections required.

None in my area, either (Sullivan County).

Davidson County
Hamilton County
Rutherford County
Sumner County
Williamson County
Wilson County
City of Memphis
