My Family is looking to move to Eastern TN. Recently my mother moved to west TN. We went to visit in December. Tn is a BEAUTIFUL state. I love the scenery and how nice everyone is. However we are looking in east as opposed to west because from what we've read, there seems to be less of a chance for tornadoes. Granted there is a chance ANYWHERE. But the poking around we've done seems like East is less chance than West.
My Hubby & son are coming down in 2 weeks to look at places with a realtor. They are looking in Hancock Co. & Union Co. We want land for privacy and scenery. Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

East Tennessee is definitely beautiful. I like it more than West Tennessee, too.

Help us out. What all are you looking for? Jobs? Schools? Do you want to be near a larger town? Do you have a price range?

We would like something that has at least 5 acres. Perfer 3 BR but 2 will do.
Hubby does construction. I work retail. Son will be starting highschool. We want to be in "no-man's" land...LOL. We want the quiet. Would perfer the drive to work to be less than an hour. And I'm thinking our price range would be about $130,000.
We've read some posts about Sneedville. Not sure what to make of them.
Like I said. When they come down, they'll be looking in Hancock & Union Counties. Can anyone tell me anything about either of those Counties?
Thanks

Well, they are OUT THERE that is for sure. You maybe looking at more than an hours drive if you are looking to work in those fields. Have you checked into Greene County? Or Hawkins county might work for you too.
The only problem I would see for you with those two counties is that mountains separate you from any larger city which may cause you difficulty in inclement weather. Other than that, they maybe exactly what you are looking for.

The counties surrounding the Tri-Cities (Washington [rural Washington], Greene, Unicoi, Carter, Sullivan) are all good and have their VERY rural pockets, each and every one! That's the grand thing about east TN, complete rural and city mix well together.

Union Co.'s not as bad as Hancock. Hancock is reaaaaaally out there, to echo the words of mbmouse. Union and Anderson have fairly easy access to Knoxville, and I'll suggest Blount Co. too because it's my own favourite -- for reasons not so obvious... I suppose it just clicked with me when I moved here!

You are right, there are very, very rarely large-scale tornadoes of any sort in east TN. My family that lives in the 'burbs of Nashville, however, regularly have tornado warnings/watches/strikes, it seems...

Right. And once you start getting closer to civilization you are going to have a tougher time finding a three-bedroom with five acres for $130,000.
