I'm interested in relocating to TN and wanted to know if people generally support animal rescue work? I see that there are several of these organizations already in existence throughout the state. Does anyone know if they are getting good support financially from the public, finding homes for a lot of animals, etc?

Check out Nashville Humane: Nashville Humane Association

I think it's one of the nicest shelters anywhere.

They are also other privately-run shelters in the area.

Well, seeing as there are no retail pet stores in many TN counties because they want you to rescue from a shelter verses buying a puppy or kitty mill pet, I would say yes.
I rescued one and she is a spoiled puppy now.

Im not sure the lack of pet retail stores is due to "they" wanting people to rescue from shelters as much as there is not a market because there are so many unwanted dogs and cats. You can find pets all day long for free on LSN or your local classifieds. They are euthenized by the scores at the local humane societies. With the many small rescues out there always needing donations, I dont think they get a great deal of financial support from the public. I know several people that have taken upon themselves to re-home abandoned dogs, I have myself a few. Unless you have a ton of $$, I would suggest volunteering with and already established rescue. Im sure they could use the help.

2mares,

Volunteering for an already established rescue sounds like a good idea. I have been wanting to become a foster home for dogs and cats but haven't been able to due to trying to sell my house and having showings all the time.

But now that I can move, becoming a foster instead of starting my own rescue sounds like the best option. Especially if people aren't generous with donations. Here, people are generous but the demand for homes for these animals is so great that the rescues are always needing more financial help.

One thing that has always bugged me about TN is that the humane societies euthanize all pitbulls and rottweilers. It's not because they're bad breeds, but because of the pit fights. You'll notice that many of the private rescues have a lot of pitbulls and rottweilers because of this. If you're looking for a cool little town, I think Dunlap might still have a rescue like that. Unfortunately, I've noticed some of these rescues shut down due to lack of donations.

There is definately a need for fostering. It is very sad the number of unwanted and abandoned pets and the lingering attitude towards dogs and cats. I think it is great that you will be able to help. That is something Id like to do, but I work full time and have a APT and Staff that I rescued and my sons boarder collie that he picked up abandoned on the side of the road and I just got a pyrenees, so there is no way I can take on anymore for any extended time.

2mares, I totally agree. People have very poor views on animals here. It's been really hard for me after coming from such a different area. But I rescue, do what I can.

4tb, I can tell you the places to avoid helping at. There's one right now that we're having major issues with and trying to get some things changed. It's so bad I've asked to be removed from their e-mail list of pets they have because I know what they go through. The group really uses emotional blackmail to extort money from rescues that want to help. And I can lead you in the direction of some people that do rescue work and are very good at it.

Again, feel free to contact me.

thou ive never been a pitbull fan, ive lived all over the USA and have yet to run into to many "nice" pits, my daddy used to work a shelter and manage the animal abuse section, i helped alot, we went on alot of pit bull calls, all was abused and trained to be mean.....but...we went on one call...the owner beat crap out of this female pit, used a 2x4 on her, had her chained tight to a tree out front, and when we arrived, she wagged her butt...whimpered, and SOOOO wanted love!!! she had been going thru this for months if not longer, was a adult, and she still refused to be mean....she was truly a unique girl, and made a great pet. thank goodness she was saved.
I personally have raised rotts, and again, people are mis-concieved about this breed to. my hubby alone was scared to death of them, until i brought a old girl from the shelter, she was abused, 10 yrs old, and about to be put to sleep. we had 3 young kids, and he was so mad id do this. but....i spent time with her, i tested her reactions, and she was a sweet baby. she lived with us for 3 more years before she passed away, whuch by that time, she wa my husbands best friend!!!! he cried so hard when she died. he now knows not all rotts are bad. we did rescue another one, that was trained wrong, as with ANY dog, its in the training, she in turn was not good to be around kids, mainly at night, if they got up to pee, she went into gaurd mode, cuz of movement/noise in the house. it was unsafe to keep her inside.
but....my point is, its unfair to put down dogs based on bred. we need to work more on proper breeding of ALL breeds, to breed out the bad thats been put in, and bring back the good.
im so sick of people assuming some breeds are dangourous and need to be killed, when i have seen more attacks from small breeds then big breeds. ive got to little dogs on my street right now that seriously(we all have seen it done) have been trained to go after kids, little dogs cab bite ya faster cuz they are small and quick, but no one ever wants to see this. they assume...small and cute means safe, not so.
dont kill a breed cuz of what idiots have done to it, work to bring back the good in that breed, its there.

Default animals in the south

i grew up in the south, and growing up (70's/80's) it was nothing new to see animals dumped, shot, drowned, etc when not wanted. no one cared, no one did anything. animal control was unheard of, etc. as a adult, i lived up north, what a differance...animal control is very big...alot of no kill shelters, alot less dumped, drowned, shot pets.
I move back south...and wow...nothing seems to be changing...pets dumped by the dozen, animal control barely exsists, and pets put down all the time in shelters.
I hope this thread helps spread the word....lets take care of pets in the south to. be responsiable, spay or nueture to avoid those unwanted litters you cant find homes for. my vet had a kitten someone rescued after it was tossed from a truck window going down the road!!!!! OMG...can people be any crueler???? if you cant care for your kids, are you going to toss them out next??? or ho about the idiots who dump their mean dogs in neigborhoods with lots of kids, i know you mean well, you think someone will take it in....i had 5 dogs dumped near my house in 6 mo....and 3 was mean as heck and one was a pit, stalked the kids, and had to be shot, it was sad.
btw....most dont realize this...cats can hunt for food and survive if dumped, not that dumping should be done, but a dog...they dont hunt...they get desperate, and when there is no more trash to dig thru, they turn mean out of hunger....its a slow death for a dog to be dumped.
we need to educate people on animal welfare down here, and let no animal be adopted without spay or nueture, and do home checks after adoption to be sure pet is cared for, up north, they do this, if you dont comply, you lose your pet, and if you cant keep, you must return it to shelter or show proof of who you rehomed to.
also...more pets would get adopted at shelters down here if they took a note from up north shelters, each month, usually on a saturday, they hold half price adoptions(again with home checks, etc) this gets pets rehomed, shelters stay less crowded, etc. also.....senor pets, usually above 8 yrs old, get adopted out for 10-20 bucks, usually about a week prior to possiably being put down, this helps give them one last chance to get a home. alot of shelters try to get pets adopted withen 2 wks of being brought in to shelter, either by reduced price, foster, etc.
I truly hope this starts to happen here, and id love to see a end to seeing 5 dogs chained to a tree in peoples yards, no shelter, no care, no love, yet tons and tons of bags of beer cans on the porch, if you can afford your beer, you can care for your pet better, and if not, DONT have a pet!!!
take care, and give your pet a hug today!!!!
