Jackson does have a higher crime rate than alot of cities... but that is just because it is bigger and there are alot of people. I lived in Lexington all my life. That is 30 minutes away. I went to Jackson almost everyday, and never once has anything happened to me.. or any of my friends or family. So, I cant answer for everyone else. But it is a nice place to live. The weather is great, and Memphis aint far.

as far as the crime aspect, those stats base their findings on how many murders/crimer per capita..so if there are 4 murders in a year in small town Jackson its going to look worse and rank higher than 4 murders in Memphis..idk if i am explaining this right

as far as moving to jackson...don't...save yourself the trouble and the boredom

We'll hope that in ten months time, the OP has made a decision about where he/she wants to live.

Love these hit and run posters. One bash and gone.

This thread is a little old but since it is close to the top of the list I will respond.

Jackson is a nice town. There is nothing wrong with it or the area in which it is located. I can imagine that Jackson would be considered boring by someone looking for a big city atmosphere, however, whether an area is boring or not is personal preference. I moved to this area almost twenty years ago from *gasp* Knoxville. I like the area better than Knoxville and E. TN as a whole. My reasons for that are far more personal than anything else. I left because my girlfriend (now my wife) lived in W. TN and I did not like my job. I now have two children and lead a very busy life involving children's activities, church and community. So I can state that this area is far from boring.

As far as crime goes, Jackson is high on the metro list. I believe that has more to do with the limited area that is defined as metro here than actually being a city with deep crime problems. Jackson has crime but it is mostly limited to the areas that "strumpeace" identified earlier in this thread. Also, Tennessee's incident based reporting system does not help these statistics as I noticed that Memphis and Nashville are both in the top 10 in one category, as well. I have never felt threatened in Jackson and consider it a safe town.

In short, it is all about what a person wants out of life as to whether an area is nice or not. A close friend of mine moved here from Franklin, TN last year and declares he would live no where else. West TN and more specifically, Jackson, does not have the awe inspiring scenery that other parts of the state has, but overall, it is a safe and nice place to live and is negatively criticized way to often on these boards.

Unless you just have to live in the Jackson area, I would look some where else. We moved there three years ago and it only took about six months to know we made a big mistake. Weather is bad, crime is bad, school system terrible, and unless you enjoy staying inside all of the time because of the insects and the reasons mentioned before don't go there.

What kind of insects? I'm in Greenville, SC now, but the most I have seen are fire ant hills and these annoying pesky flies that like to land on you.

North Jackson or Three Way are good places to live. Have several friends that live in that area. Never mentioned any problems.

Well, apparently you have never lived in a big city. Jackson is a smaller version of a big city. In large cities you have good neighborhoods next to bad, On city block could be crime ridden and the next not so much. It depends on your neighbors.
