Does anyone know any specifics about the Jamestown area? I see it has a regional medical center and is obviously more Appalachian in character. I see that it is also close to Pickett State Park, and has very low property taxes. Is it a good place for retirees?

The "regional medical center" in Jamestown is a very small hospital licensed for 85 beds but actually uses fewer. There's a small Wal-Mart SuperCenter in Jamestown and a couple of Family Dollar type stores. It's a beautiful area but very off the beaten path. It's a great area for horseback riding, hiking, gardening, etc. It's close to the old Victorian village of Rugby and the rugged Big South Fork National Recreation Area. But there are very few restaurants there, hardly any medical specialists, and not a whole lot of cultural attractions.

But it really is a beautiful area.

Thanks for the helpful tips.

Would you say the cost of living is high, low or moderate? Eidson sounds beautiful too! Hope I can make it out there sometime soon.

Good Morning, I would say the cost of living is low. Tn has no state income tax and low property taxes. We do have a sales tax but that's nothing compared to high property taxes in other areas I've heard of. There are several motels just off I-40 at the 417 exit.

I am amazed at the low property taxes. I was looking at a property the other day in Fentress County that was 1800 sqft on 10 acres with property taxes of $350. That same property where I live now would have taxes over $5000.
How is the DSL or cable internet availability like in the more rural areas of TN?

For the most part it's pretty much available but weird. Areas where you would think it would not be available it is and visa versa. I live only 5 minutes to town just off the interstate, I mean, I am NOT rural and DSL nor cable is available. Cable is about 800 to 1000 feet away and they won't run it to me. I use the Verizon card and it works beautiful.

I don't live in an expensive house but my property taxes are $150 per year. Can't beat that!!
