Since we have decided to relocate to TN, I would like for our son to learn as much as possible about our new home state.
Are there any books you can recommend for this?
Thank you!!

We do thematic units, so my first impulse would be to find common themes: historical figures like Davy Crockett or maybe broken into historical periods and the important people of those times; presidents and presidential candidates; famous musicians, etc. Then, I'd just start finding all the biographies and other books I could about the theme. I also know that Alpha Omega has elective courses for each state. Even if it is too old for your child, it may help you get acclimated. Sorry I can't be more specific because I don't know your required reading level, but we have had great luck with finding resources at all levels using the method I described. Have you checked tnhistoryforkids.org? It looks helpful, too.

One of my favorites about the Middle Tennessee area is Seedtime on the Cumberland. I'm not sure whether a youngster would enjoy it or not. There's a photographic book titled Beautiful Tennessee that's nice.

How old is your son? That would help on making recommendations.

You might also like to browse around the Nashville Library website: http://www.library.nashville.org/index.asp

There are history links, information for new arrivals, kids stuff, etc. Some of the information would apply only to Nashville, but some of it would apply to Tennessee in general.

You could also ask them for recommendations on books for younger readers on Tennessee history and nature. They are usually pretty helpful. If you find you can't become you're not a patron, let me know and I'll ask for you.
