I have been very reluctant to ask this question, because I get the feeling that many people in Tennessee are very proud, hard working people. We also hope to become part of that, however in the mean time I was wondering about Ten-care? Is there anyway to find out what is covers without applying for it? We cant apply for it until we live in Tn and have some sort of income. However my son will need speech services (and hopefully a new implant in his left ear) as soon as we arrive. So is anyone on, or have ever used this service? In Michigan everything (except the second implant) is covered. They even give me money for gas to drive back and forth, replace any parts that need it, and pay for all services. We need to get out of here to get jobs, but I don’t want to risk my sons education because we can’t afford speech.

Hello,

When I moved here from Seattle, I needed help with pregnancy medical as I am not working. After getting my valid I.D. and went over to the department of Health, they put me on a temporary TennCare health plan that covered pretty much everything for 45 days and then my state health insurance covered me after that. There are only a few places that cover TennCare so I would do a little more research on what offices accept it.

Here is a website that they gave me that list some helpful information:
TennCare

Hope this helps.

Default TennCare

benefits are extremely difficult to get these days and primarily for those who are disabled, seniors, have extremely limited income, and/or otherwise unable to work. The program has been in a phase-out for several years and many, many of those previously receiving TennCare have been cut from the program. Children are far more likely to qualify, but will still have to meet family income levels. If you, or your spouse, have access to insurance through work, you will not qualify. At this point, I would be less concerned about coverage and more concerned if you can qualify for TennCare.

What you may check into is SHIP -State Health Insurance Program instead, which offers other options, but you will have to pay a portion of it. SHIP offers insurance for those who have been rejected for coverage. Can't say how good the coverage is for it though, no personal experience.

Good luck!

Excellent post. There are no guarantees on obtaining coverage here in TN. What's more, there are no guarantees if you do get coverage that you will keep it. There have been thousands dropped from the rolls. It sounds as if you have a wonderful situation in MI with your sons coverage and benefits. My 2 cents would be for you to keep those benefits there and plan some visits here for interviews. Once you have a job with benefits here you will be much more assured of coverage.

Depending on whether you qualify and for which package they assign you, it's basically whatever is medically necessary.
I have two kids, one from a previous marriage. My son (husbands stepson) does not qualify for Coverkids, which my daughter is on. My son is not eligible because my husband is not his biological father. They were both on Coverkids until I lost my job. The way they set it up is that my son is on TennCare based on MY income, which is nothing. My daughters is based on my husbands income.
I pay copays on my daughters medical needs, but not on my sons. We have only been on it a short time (Tenncare) and so far he has only seen the dentist.
Coverkids is no longer accepting applications.
To be on TennCare your income has to be low.
