Pretty sure it's the 3 far north east towns of Johnson City, Bristol, and Kingsport.

Yes, it is. The Tri-Cities (Johnson City Kingsport and Bristol) is in the farthest North East part of the State. It is the region between NC, just north of Asheville NC and south of VA, just south of Abington VA. We are in a horse shoe shape valley of small foothills that are from the Smokie (to our south) and Clinch (to our North) we are also bordered by KY.

Rarely I have heard Memphis, Nashville, and Knoxville referred to as a tri-cities as well. But yes, 99.99% of the time, agreed with mbmouse...

FYI Nashville-Davidson is a metro area, not two cities.

That's correct. Nashville-Davidson IS Nashville. When the two governments merged back in the 1960s, the city of Nashville ceased to exist; it gave up its city charter and was absorbed by the county, Davidson. So, technically, there is no "city of Nashville" and instead there's the "Metropolitan Government of Nashville-Davidson County."

Many people point to that event as the time when Nashville really started to expand economically; prior to that, Nashville, Knoxville, and Chattanooga were all about the same size.

There are two government districts in Nashville however, the urban services district and the general services district. The tax rates are different as well.

Off-topic . . . but if anyone ever need population figures for certain periods of time, the University of Virginia website is a good one. The link is: http://fisher.lib.virginia.edu/colle...ts/histcensus/

Memphis and surrounding areas are referred to as the MID-SOUTH, we are in Tennessee and next to Mississippi and Arkansas but we aren't Tri-cities.

Kingsport, Johnson City, and Bristol are the three larger cities that are so designated as the Tri-Cities area, but a host of smaller towns also help make up this beautiful part of northeast Tennessee.

Yep, the Tri-Cities and all the smaller surrounding towns together is what is often referred to as the North East TN Region.
