For those that were on this forum last December, it was mentioned that in November 2006, the people of Tennessee voted to freeze property taxes at age 65. Property taxes would not be increased after age 65 unless improvements were made to the property. The Tennessee State Legislature was going to meet early in 2007 to figure out how to implement the people's wishes. We only knew, at the time, they were planning to come up with a way to determine the income level for which the freeze would apply.

The concern here was with all of these new people moving to Tennessee, and property taxes expected to skyrocket, with many of the elderly being on a fixed income, what was going to happen to them when they could no longer pay their property tax.

Here's an Associated Press update, published in the Oak Ridger, that summarizes what's going on in the State Legislature on that issue now:

I hope they do the right thing with this one and not get it stuck in such bureaucratic mess that it is not worth the vote. Our seniors need those breaks.
Thanks for keeping us informed LauraC.
