When you talk about striking up conversations with complete strangers, I'm sure I'll fit right in. My friends and kids think it's weird that I do it, but to me it's perfectly normal. Do it all the time!

Yes, Sally I am in the same boat with you. My personality profile indicates that not only will I talk to someone heading to the restroom, but I'll follow them in. LOL

Oh! You two will do great in Tennessee! Daily, I wonder how I survived before living here. It was extremely depressing to try to strike up conversation after conversation only to be looked at like I was crazy. I guess I was always meant to live here.

As3369, I don't know if I'm as "dedicated" to conversation as you are, but I get the idea!! People are friendly here too, I just have them all beat!! My friend liked to tell the story about the time a group of my friends were hiking (in the Smokies by coincidence) and on the way up I struck up a long conversation with another group of women, I knew their entire life story before we were done (it was a long hike to the most beautiful waterfall). My friend said she was worried I was going to leave with them and ditch my friends. She was always amazed at how I could strike up random conversations with total strangers. It just seemed normal to me. You never know who you might meet or what you might learn.

I am convinced that every person has a story to tell. When I was a reporter I used to write a lot of personal interest stories.

Someone who is sitting on the porch and invites you up for a spell, or a neighbor who just wants to chat. (gossip does not count) people who want to go to the park with their kids and actually do things as a family together. We invited several FAMILIES for trick or treat in or neighborhood and they all droped their kids and left. One came home from school with us and his Mom said it would be okay if he stayed until Sunday she will pick him up around 5. We don't want to be judged because we wern't born there, but we sure would like to feel like we belong.

MI or TN, drive and see for yourself, there are very few people outside of their homes (cars, shops, businesses). Actually, as somebody who drives a lot, I can say that seeing a person outside doing things, chatting, sitting on a porch is an invitation to stare, it's so unusual, work day or weekend, CA, NM, TN or MI. Unless kids are bussed to a baseball etc. games and supervised they do NOT play outside anymore (almost) on their own.

This southern hospitality BS got to stop, I lived both in MI and TN and it's ALL about THE SAME. Sure there are some minuscule differences, but on the average, if you expect some kind of culture shock engulfing your in warmth and fuzz of neighborliness, that's delusional mildly speaking.

I do that too, and it always amazes my friends. They're like, who the hell was that!? And I'm like, um, I dunno? lol. I get it from my mother though... you find out all KINDS of interesting info just by talking to people!!! Networking rocks!

Being from Pennsylvania, but very familiar with the Johnson City/Elizabethton/Watauga area, the friendliness of the folks down your way absolutely knocks me over every time we come down. It is our dream to move to the area some day, hopefully before we retire.
