There has been a lot of discussion and questions about the crime stats in TN and cities/towns/areas within TN. I think this is a good article in today's paper that explains why our stats sometimes look like TN is a crime mecca.

JohnsonCityPress.com - Local News - Johnson City, TN

This one traffic stop got 4 "crimes" added to the stats list for Johnson City:

1.possession of schedule IV drugs for resale
2.using improper plates
3.possession of drug paraphernalia
4.driving on a suspended license

So one dumb guy increased the crime stats 4 clicks, but do these "crimes" make the area less safe? Well, if he really was reselling the drugs, I could see that as a "yes", but the other 3 really doesn't impact the safety of my family in accordance to crime in the area. It adds to the population of "stupid people" quota maybe () for driving with the wrong plates and with a suspended license, but the crime stats?

What are your thoughts on crime stats reporting and how much do you weigh those overall stats when looking to move to an area?

All thoughts and opinions on this topic welcome.

I for one, would like a little more information when viewing these "stats." I'm not sure what home invasions are reported as, by I am of the opinion that most of these are targeted residences. In other words, the perps know that there are drugs or large amounts of money or valuables in the residence. Even though we read about a home invasion, seldom does it tell us why the home was targeted. If a resident does not get involved with drugs or keep large amounts of cash around, and limit who has access to your home, I believe this dramatically reduces you chance of becoming a victim. Homicide could also be included as many involve the above and you can add domestic problems to the reasons. I guess that's why I think for the average resident, the "crime stats" apply to a resident with a varying degree dependant upon personal choices and lifestyle.
