Hi! I'm strongly considering moving from Illinois to Tennessee when I leave for college. I'm very attracted to the small town way of life, but I want to be reasonably close to Nashville. By the way, is there any foundation to the Tennessee/southern charm, or is that a 'Hollywood' fabrication? I'll definitely visit in the next couple years, but I've yet to travel there. I really have no idea which towns would most suit what I'm looking for: low crime rates, charming small town lifestyle, friendly community, and close to city. Any thoughts? Also, being close to a college would be great. I'm a good student, 3.43 unweighted GPA and a 3.67 weighted GPA leaning towards a career in psychology and therapy. If anyone has any recommendations based off that miniscule info for a college in central TN that's awesome! Thanks, and don't hesitate to reply with as much detail as possible!

You may want to check out Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville. Cookeville is located about an hour east of Nashville and about 90 minutes west of Knoxville. If you go to the Cookeville forum, I'm sure that JMT will provide you an enormous amount of information about the area. Good luck!

I think the "Southern charm" you speak of is actually more of a "small town charm" thing. As the larger cities in the south have grown and become more like cities everywhere else, they are less like the "Mayberry" fabrication (and yes, Mayberry has always been mostly a fabrication). Having said that however, there are elements of the TV Mayberry that you still find in most small towns (I'd guess everywhere in the USA and Canada). It's also been my experience that you'll find more people who greet strangers in the South than in other places, and that includes even the cities. However, when you get beyond the greeting, everything is pretty much the same in any city.

I hope this was not just jibberish to you... I have travelled the country and parts of the world, and I've noted the differences and similarities.

Having said that... I agree with the Tn Tech suggestion. Also, look at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, and UT-Martin in Martin, Tn (west part of the state). Look at Martin College in Pulaski, and Bryan College in Dunlap.
