Expect delays for the foreseeable future if you're traveling toward Chattanooga from Nashville. A sinkhole swallowed the left shoulder, the left lane, and part of the right lane of I-24 eastbound. One truck lost control when swerving to miss the hole, but there were no injuries. I-24 eastbound is closed between exits 117 and 127 and traffic is being diverted to Hwy 41.

TDOT's Smartmap says it will be cleared up by 8:00pm, but I can tell from looking at pictures that's not going to happen. Expect closure for a week or more.

Wow ! ! !
Is this a common occurence in Tennessee ?
Florida people are moving to TN to get away from:
-Hurricanes
-Long Hot Humid summers
-High property taxes
-High home/land prices
-Rude neighbors/nasty people
- and SINKHOLES ! ! !
I guess 5 out of 6 isnt bad.

I wouldn't call it "common", but it does happen. It's a possibility anywhere you have karst topography with underground streams/rivers. There are limestone caves all over the Cumberland Plateau, and an unknown cave just below the surface could collapse at any time.

One big difference is that TN typically doesn't have as much rainfall and groundwater flow as FL, so the topography doesn't change as fast. The area of this sinkhole has had record rainfall in the past month.

WOW! Thank God it was noticed at 7am.

A sinkhole that large collapsing overnight would have probably resulted in some serious accidents.

I do too. It coulda turned out real bad, luckily it didn't.

It wasn't but a few months ago our daughter took a school trip by school buss down that same stretch. Sometimes we forget how lucky we all are, until someting like this happens. It can happen at anytime, anyplace.
