My wife and I are from Mississippi but we are currently living in Nashville, TN so that I can attend nurse anesthetist school. We are wanting to settle down somewhere in eastern Texas but we are clueless of where to choose. We are seeking a good little town but the major factor is the salary (plenty of loans to pay off)! If anyone has any suggestions on towns, hospitals or contacts WE would GREATLY appreciate it! THANKS!

Tyler is pretty much the medical center of East Texas....it's a nice town with a number of small towns scattered all around it within easy commuting distance.

yeah--that is what I was going to suggest
you might try Conroe as well--north of Houston--
not so much a small town anymore but you can work in Conroe and live outside in one of the smaller areas...
Longview does not really appeal to me but it would probably have hospitals/clinics that would need your services
and the area around Lake Bob Sandlin is growing farther north if growing
don't know anything about the hospital situation there but the two lakes are drawing retirees...

Also, it's not East but is in the NorthEast part of Texas - Sherman/Denison, TX is a large medical center for the area between Dallas and Oklahoma city. There are two large hospitals and several surgical centers. Texoma Medical Center just moved into their new campus bewteen the the two towns and quite a few new medical personnel are moving into the area.

Denison Hospital, Denison Medical, Denison Health

The other hospital, it's in Sherman, has just been bought out by a major hospital chain in Dallas and is putting millions into updating their services.

Wilson N. Jones Medical Center

They are both located on Lake Texoma, the largest manmade lake in the US. Lots of good housing available right now....a couple of factories have closed recently so it's a good time to buy a house or rent an apartment for a very reasonable price.

Also, McKinney, a northern suburb of Dallas, is growing rapidly and has a couple of new hospitals and there is a Baylor Hospital under construction right now there.

CRNA's get hired at around $125K-$150K and can make over $200K in Houston.

If you mean EAST TEXAS PROPER, you're probably going to want to look at Tyler (medical hub), Paris or maybe Beaumont (if you can stand it).

Tyler, for pay and opportunities in East Texas, does not compare to DFW, Houston, San Antonio

Many small towns to live in within a 20 minute drive.

cost of living is high in Tyler--maybe more than people expect--housing has always been as or more expensive there than in Dallas or Houston for comparable home...

I just wonder what it is about east Texas that makes you choose it--
if you think it will be like Nashville I think you might check the info about the area abetter

the schools there are generally not considered as good as other areas of Texas
it can be very humid in the summer and hot
and there are other factors that (for me) make is not a very attractive location...

These are very good points.

You probably need to take a nice road trip through Texas to be sure you know what you're getting into. East Texas is unlike any other place in the lower 48.

Cost of housing is higher not really high, because there are few "track" type house built in Tyler, so custom homes are built bringing up the average cost of a house. DFW and other build thousands of track homes, so quantity, being built, brings down the average cost.

And yes, Tyler is not Nashville, but I bet you will like it. Most people do, negetive post are the posts from people who mostly haven't lived here or that wanted Tyler to be "like home", wanted to change Tyler into something it is not. So THEY don't like it. Give it a try.
