UNCERTAIN, Texas — As Capt. Ron Gibbs navigates his pontoon boat down a narrow waterway lined with bald cypress trees dripping Spanish moss, he shuts off the motor. The only noise punctuating the silence is birds calling as the boat glides under the bright summer sun on Caddo Lake.
Visitors to this lake tucked away in Texas' forested northeast corner find a mysterious labyrinth of swamps, sloughs and bayous, home to a vast array of wildlife from owls to eagles to alligators. A boat tour of the lake takes visitors through seas of bright green water lilies, down shaded watery avenues and past islands of dense forest.
"There are some areas that are so primeval it'll make the hair on the back of your neck stand up," said Gibbs, whose Graceful Ghost Steamboat Company Inc. is one of several outfits offering boat tours of the lake. "It's a supernatural feeling. It's downright spooky in some areas."

Hey Miss Cathy! Ain't talked to you in a while!

LOL We get out there at least once a year and I LOVE it! But as I read in a Texas Monthly article once, something along the lines of "once you set eyes on Caddo Lake...you will either scream, turn around and run the other way...or you'll be hooked for like.

The last dog bit me, looks the first one might get you if you should ever decide to explore it for yourself!

Anyway, great picture Renaud!

We camped out in the State Park on June 26th. We just canoed around that area and went on the nature walks. Camping out in the heat was not the best experience and there was a Bug Symphony from 10pm-12am. Next time we will go in cooler weather or we will stay in a cabin.

I think that is East Texas in general....one either loves it or hates it, LOL!!

I will visit Caddo Lake one day....in the WINTER, thank you very much!

It's sort of like an East Texan going to West Texas....OMG, how do people live out here in this DESERT?!?!

Enjoy Caddo!

That picture gives me the creeps too. Giant Salvinia, an invasive plant species, is threatening the health of Caddo Lake. Financial assistance is desperately needed to help combat the problem. That's sad.

This is very true CC. When we were out last and talking to some of the folks out there, the general opinion was that headway was being made, but it was very slow. And yes, it is very sad. It is the only natural lake in Texas.

If you ever need any leads on good places to stay, let me know. We have been going out each year for the past 15 or so and, having stayed in various places, have made some good friends out that way.
