I do this frequently, as do other Texan drivers.

You are on a two-lane highway, and a vehicle behind you comes into view in your rearview mirror. He or she seems to be in a hurry, but can't pass due to the solid yellow line, or the traffic is on the other side of the road. You pull over on the shoulder to let him or her pass, the driver gives a wave or flashes the taillights. You get back on the road and continue to drive.

Do you do this, and is it legal?

Yes, especially out in West Texas on 2-lane highways where it would be difficult to pass. I assume it’s legal; I’ve never heard otherwise.

Absolutely! It’s just good manners, like the quick wave to oncoming cars.

It's legal, and done by most courteous drivers when safe to do so.

In my experience, most people don't do this. I drive a fair amount of country roads, and it's uncommon for drivers to do this. But most of my country driving is Washington County and environs; maybe it's more common in west Texas.

I drive rural backroads every week for work and I see this all of the time. I do it too if someone behind me is in a big hurry.

I see it quite often in northeast Texas - think Buffalo, Palestine, Corsicana area. It's probably common out west too though.

Whether or not I do this depends on the condition of the shoulder. My understanding of the custom is that you pull over but do not slow down, that you’re not expected to break your own pace. Where the shoulder is wide and smooth, no sweat. Otherwise I don’t pull over.
