My husband got a ticket in Texas maybe 5 years ago and never paid it. His mom still gets letters (warrants? not sure) in the mail every now and then. My question is, if we wanted to move to Texas, when would it be safe to do so without him being carted off to jail?

He would need to turn himslef in if there is a wrrant. Its likely the warrant is for failure to appear on the ticket whi9ch is really a second charge, By signing the ticket he promised the court he would appear( call tec) on the ticket. He will be booked on both charges and have to paost bond how;instead of allowed to promise in signature. He cold call teh jurisdiction involved to see if they would accept a payment of fine on both charges;that is upto the judge .With the new license plate readers its easier for police to check warrants and if stoped he will be arrested and have to post bond, His vehivcle will be twoed which increases the cost.

I would call the court and see what they could arrange. Sometimes they give amnesty and may just allow you to pay it with no other penalty.

They don't want you, they just want the money. Call the court and pay it. You'll likely have to pay whatever penalty is involved which will likely make the total double the original fine or thereabouts.

Happened to me. I had a speeding ticket in rural Oregon that I never paid. Happened when I was in grad school and driving a rental car. Somehow I forgot about it or lost the ticket when I turned the rental car in.

about 8 years later when I was buying a house in Alaska this old ticket popped up on a credit check that the bank was doing and I was forced to clear it up before getting the mortgage. This was back before banks where throwing mortgages at anyone who could breathe.

I ended up just calling the rural court where the ticket was from and the woman there very nicely helped me clear it up but I had to pay the penalty which was about double the original fine.

Point it, it will catch up with you so just get it dealt with. No one wants to throw you in jail for a speeding ticket, they just want the $$$.
