After years of legal wrangling, the giant (77', 7" tall) cross that has been laying on private property near S.H. 16 and Interstate 10 was finally erected by noon Tuesday. The group behind it, The Coming King Foundation (http://www.thecomingkingfoundation.org/welcome.asp - broken link), plans on building gardens around it, as well as a library, museum, art exhibit, and eventually...pad lease sites for restaurants and other businesses. They also want to help other locations across the country build their own "gardens". Locals have strong opinions on both sides of the debate.

Being out-of-town, I have yet to see what it looks like, but have seen the photos and watched the live video feed when it was erected. Has anyone driven by it or have any thoughts?

It's a trendy thing nowadays. A couple came up in Houston not long ago. We're following Tennessee's lead.

To me, it's like a billboard coming up to advertise a business. Not really a big deal. This one just happens to be advertising the most successful business establishment in the country, if not the world.

I agree with that assessment.

I imagine that it looks like a biga$$ cross. I think my mental image of it precludes me from needing to actually visit.

Sounds like a worthy expenditure of dollars.

$2M of expenditures to be exact. Well, that is just for the cross. According to their website, future plans for the site include pad sites for lease, monumental sculptures, art museum, Biblical evidence museum, American heritage museum, gift shop, artists' gallery, Christian book store, public facilities, caretaker's apartment, abortion memorial, baptismal pool, trails, amphitheater, and a light-laser beaming the Word of God into Space...among others.

I am sure this is what Jesus would want.

Wow, if they spent $2M on a concrete or whatever cross (probably should have put out a request for bids), how much is a super laser into space gonna set them back?

As far as additional "monumental sculptures," I propose they add...an even bigger cross. Some folks may not be convinced by a 77 footer but will really turn an eager ear to them if they've got a 144 footer.

I'm Jewish so to me it means nothing but enormous Christian symbols can be kind of obnoxious.
