A poster mentioned the mysterious Marfa, Texas ghost lights on another topic.

I thought the subject was so interesting that a new topic devoted to them and
other interesting Texas oddities would be nice.

Please feel free to share your knowledge of other mysteries/oddities that make
Texas special.

Here is a quote from the Handbook of Texas regarding the Marfa lights:

Quote:

MARFA LIGHTS. The Marfa lights are visible every clear night between Marfa and Paisano Pass in northeastern Presidio County as one faces the Chinati Mountains. At times they appear colored as they twinkle in the distance. They move about, split apart, melt together, disappear, and reappear. Presidio County residents have watched the lights for over a hundred years.

Cool idea. I'd love to visit Marfa.

I've never been, but I knew a lot of people who talked about the Saratoga lights in E. Texas:
Light of Saratoga - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Now this I did see. This is real. Although I believe it is just one of those natural phenomenon like finding Jesus's face in some inanimate object. But yes it does look like a face:
Halloween's Unseen - Ghost Stories and Pictures
If the link fails, it's the face on UTMB-Galveston.

Marfa is a strange little town.

Marfa is Russian for Martha.

One of the more weird explanations of the Marfa lights concerns
German POWs held at the Marfa Army Airfield who had escaped.

When I did a search for more info... I came across this:

" Even the German Luffwaffe has a presence here – several of its officers, serving time as World War II POW’s at Fort D.A. Russell’s Building 98, painted panoramic murals of the Marfa Plateau. "

Marfa, Texas Chamber of Commerce

"Building 98 is specifically known for the hauntingly beautiful murals painted during WWII by two German POW's of General Irwin Rommel's (The Desert Fox) elite Afrika Korps, who were billeted at Fort Russell after their defeat by General George Patton's Third Army in North Africa."

They are just headlights from traffic on 67. I would be interested in the German POW explanation though. Are the German escapees still lost out there and we are seeing their flashlights?

How do you explain many sightings of the lights before automobiles ?

Stange synchronicity...

German POWs from " General Irwin Rommel's (The Desert Fox) elite
Afrika Korps " were held in the high desert of West Texas.

The city/county of Rockwall was named after mysterious
outcroppings of what looks like a rock wall. Many people
in the area used to think the rocks were the remnants of
an ancient man-made wall.

Parts of the wall can be found scattered around Rockwall
county and also found in Collin county near the towns of
Lavon and Nevada.

Today, most people think the rock wall formation is natural.

Here are some old photos of the rock wall.

Judge for yourself.

Rockwall, TX

Yes, and they are riding those camels that have been stuck out in that area so long!

Mythology. There are not any documented sightings predating automobiles. People just say that to make the lights seem more mysterious.
