Take a ride to Tampico. (about 350 miles south of Brownsville) The Beach is like the one in SPI and they're starting to really develop it with hotels and resorts.

You'll like the ride.

Tour By Mexico ® - Tampico City in Tamaulipas State, Mexico

And just a little further south, across the border in Veracruz State is the pyramid site of El Tajin.

El Tajin Guide Archaeology Park

You'll love it, it gets more tropical the further south you get.

On the way back you can ride through the Sierra Madres go through San Luis Potosi, Monterrey and back into Texas through either Laredo or the RGV.

You can get anything you want at the pharmacies. My suggestion is go in a little, or go to the street West of the main drag. They are generally cheaper. Also, don't forget to bargain. When I went to buy 4 pills of generic viagra (for my friend of course one pharmacy told me 7 dollars a pill. I left in a huff, bought some chicle and came back and said another pharmacist said 5 a pill. I got them for $5.50 each. Put everything you buy in your purse or your pocket when you cross back. The only thing they will get you on for sure is the liquor tax.

Matamoros is safe to cross during the day and before 7, as long as you are in the tourist areas. Besides Garcia's, there are other places where you can go lunch and dine and that are safe which are: Las Tablitas (near the bridge), Mi pueblito (also near bridge), and Los Portales ( a little further but secure), they serve great food in those restaurnts. Los Portales may be a bit pricey, but its totally worth it. Also, if you see a person working as a watchmen in parking lots, always tip them $2.00 or more if you want your vehicle to be safe.

It is safe to cross, as long as you are careful where you are going, and smile and be nice to others.

TEATIME:

With all due respect, but only because you listen and see on the news all the corruption that mexico has, it doesn't mean its not the same here in the U.S. It is not any different, the only difference is the amount of money put in to stay crystal clear. Everyone is corrupt. Not long ago in Brownville, there was the mexican festivities where they have parades, on a parade occassion there was some type of minor shooting and the parade had to be stopped. I got word from a friend officer that 4 officers arrested and beat up the 19 year old kid that fired his gun, and that later died out of the beating.

Crime is gradually growing in south Texas, you can't even flash someone your headlights because you might end up shot. The other day I went to the mall, and some lady was saying to the mall security guy how some man went up to her at gun point and robbed her car.

Also these past couple of months the FBI have arrested SEVERAL customs agents, border patrol agents, constables, and other law enforecement officers from the south texas valley that have been involved in bribes, money laundery, drug trafficing, and recently this cop for selling weapons in Mexico. I am a good citizen of the south texas valley, and i really don't feel safe living around here anymore, crime is flourishing everywhere.

Anyhow, all I am trying to say is that Mexico is not the only corrupt country, its just that value for silence is more expensive in the U.S, than in Mexico.
