I say we cut off the panhande and make the Ouachita Mountains region our new panhandle. Give us more bragging rights!

People always recommend the Hill Country but SE Oklahoma and Arkansas are really beautiful, less crowded, little traffic and generally easier to access.

Have a great trip, Catman. I used to love the star parties but back when I lived out that way, they were held at the observatory. Either way, there's not a bit of light to distract from the stars, is there?

No...that's what makes it so dark! The observatory has star parties too, but monthly (I think) and not nearly on the scale of the annual Texas Star Party. The TSP has very strict rules about lights being used after dark, since people are out there doing time exposures, and no one wants to lose their night vision for the next several minutes due to a light. Only dim red lights are permitted. It's great!

We go there about this time every year (and stay a few days). The crisp, clear mountain air and cooler temps are wonderful and refreshing. The deciduous trees are also much prettier during the Fall than piney woods.

I know it's been four months but I just now saw your reply...

I have been to the Ouachita Mountains and gone to scenic drive. It was great! Too bad there aren't any mountains actually inside of Texas near DFW. I think far west Texas does have some mountains and canyons though.
