My husband is transferring to a plant in Sherman Texas from Northern IL. We are looking to see what would be the best area to live in with good schools and a nice neighborhood. I have heard the W and SW area, but not being from Sherman I am unsure what part of the city is W or SW. If someone could let me know as in relation to Austin College or 75, that would be great. Also I would like to know about crime, schools, friendliness, etc. Thanks in advance.

If you look at a map, the top is North, the bottom is South. The left side is West, the right side is East. In the West part of town........there are a number of nice homes (mostly 1980's, 1990's built) for sale in the area bordered by FM 1417, Lamberth Rd, Hwy 82, and Taylor (mostly less than $200K) Some of the nicest homes in town are just off West Houston Street (Hwy 56) in far West Sherman - exit off W Houston on Laurel Creek Rd. into that neighborhood (mostly 1990's) (mostly in the $200'sK) The only new neighborhood in town is just west of 1417, near Hwy 82, behind Faith Church (probably all $300K and above). There are also some moderately priced homes (less than 10 yrs old, lower $100's) on 1417 South of Herman Baker Park - not far off Hwy 75....also some nice apartment complexes (these houses are near most of the plants (Tyson, TI, Folgers, etc) in case that is where your husband is going to be working).

You would not want to live anywhere near Austin College....it is too bad that a wonderful college is situated in the roughest part of town. Most of the crime is in that eastern area of town. Crime rate is low in the rest of town, altho there are lots of car accidents on the entire strip of Hay 75 from the Oklahoma border to south of Sherman. The shopping mall (Sherman Town Center) is on Hwy 75 between Sherman and Denison. There are two medical centers......WNJ Presbyterian in the west part of town, and TMC, on 75 between Sherman and Denison.

Welcome to Texas....hope you enjoy it here. The Sherman area is very friendly, very accepting of newcomers. Best wishes....
