In some states its illegal.

Is this dangerous? I've read both sides - some people say you need all your hearing for horns and emergency vehicles others say even deaf people can drive just fine.

I take the middle ground- there are headphones that do allow outside noise and sometimes I drive across the state in my convertible. I can't hear much unless I blast the stereo.

In the isolated parts of the state I would say its just fine to be able to listen to my IPOD through the headphones.

Closed (cups over the ears) headphones are dangerous. Open ones aren't as bad. I've heard some car audio systems which were so loud that they are every bit as dangerous as any headphones, with the added 'feature' that they bother everyone within a hundred yards. Anyway, if you can hear what's going on around you, they're probably OK, especially out in the middle of nowhere.
