There has been a lot of discussion on Texas firearms forums concerning getting the Texas Legislature a law to allow the open carrying of firearms in this state.

Currently Texas is one of only seven states (and the District of Columbia) where "open carry" is not allowed.

There are many good points on both sides of the discussion (pro and against), but I would like to get the "non-gun enthusiasts" opinion. So if you would please, could you state your opinion as to whether Texas should have an open carry law or not?

Feel free to post comments on why you voted a certain way.

Thanks! M2

No. Guns are built for one purpose and one purpose only: to kill, whether it's animals or people, guns kill. If you are afraid to go out in public get pepper spray or a pocket knife.

This should not even be a priority for the next legislative session. We've got an $18 billion budget shortfall to close and a myriad of more important issues than an open-carry law.

Yes open carry would be wonderful!I hope Texas passes it.I'm all for keeping and bearing arms always felt this way I feel safe when in my home with a peace maker and having it out in public would be even better!I'm sorry for lost of life due to the criminals using them but if they can have a gun to commit a crime then I should have the right to use a gun to protect myself and my love ones.

guns were made with the sole purpose of killing. Killing animals or people, it was made to kill.

Guns are not just made to kill. I like shooting at paper targets, nothing more. Quite a few firearms are made strictly for target shooting. I have a Texas Concealed Carry License and carry a gun in my car when I go to play somewhere (I'm a professional musician), as often I have to drive home late at night through questionable territory. This 'guns are evil' business is ridiculous. I regard my pistol as a last resort for defensive purposes only.

I'd like to have the option to carry openly. I probably wouldn't do so often, but it should be my right.

Hey there M2! Followed ya over from "Do you think ...". I told myself to just visit and not join in but.... Passed on voting, didn't want to skew the results.

I can understand people wanting the legislature to concern itself with budget, with good reason.

But I can not understand how someone could oppose open carry simply because that would allow someone to carry a firearm without concealing it. There are already tens of thousands of people in the state of Texas who carry firearms daily. The only difference would be in the way the firearm is carried.

From what I've been able to gather, most people who already carry concealed would continue to carry concealed in most situations.

While carrying pepper spray and/or a pocket knife is a good suggestion, neither of them are likely to keep one from harm in a variety of situations. One possible is walking my dog. There are many coyotes around here. Pepper spray isn't going to stop them, and I don't relish the idea of tackling one with a pocket knife. Carrying a concealed pistol is currently a choice, but retrieving a firearm from concealment can take time, sometimes too much time.

I value my freedoms. Including my freedom of choice. Having lived in other states that allow a person the choice of how to carry, I sort of got used to it. And I'd sure like to have that freedom of choice here.

I've always recommended people take a vacation in a state that allows open carry, such as AZ, KY, NM, CA, etc. Lots to choose from, there are over 40 states that allow it. Check it out and see how much it (doesn't) effect day-to-day life.

I have a CHL and carry sometimes. But I would never open carry. I think in certain situations it could make the open carry holder the first target.

I own several guns, fired several thousand rounds of ammo, and so far the only thing I have killed are many paper targets, and one snake.

Hoplophobia from the Greek hoplon, meaning armor, is defined as the "fear of firearms" and as the "fear of armed citizens" The late gun expert Jeff Cooper stated that "the most common manifestation of hoplophobia is the idea that instruments possess a will of their own, apart from that of their user."

Jeff Cooper was a smart man.
