What is the point in digging up an old thread in only to make a blanket untrue negative statement? I've spent some time in Odessa and never seen and thing close. Now Odessa is a blue colar town and not as nice as say Midland but it's not half as bad as one is lead to believe.

Thumbs up Odessa

Cool place..flew in the airport in Midland a few years back and was really impressed with the town and the area. I guess I'm saying this because before I went there I thought it was going to be horrible but I ended up having a good time. Wouldn't live there (not green and humid enough for me) but nice area.

Interesting, yes, there is an Odessa Russia but no one really knows the origin of the name Odessa Texas. One guess is the original founder's last name was Odessa and another is the workers building the railroad at that time was from Odessa Russia. Who knows.

Was it named after the present-day city in Ukraine?

No one knows with any certainty.

The predominate theory is:

"The name supposedly comes from railroad workers who claimed it reminded them of the Odessa region in the south of Russia. The name did spring up at the same time the Texas and Pacific tracks were set down in July of 1881. Odessa got a post office in 1885 - a year before the town was platted. It was officially organized in 1891, but they didn't get around to incorporating until 1927."

Odessa has an ice skating rink, so it has to be better than a lot of other places

My opinion is that Odessa doesn't really live up to it's reputation, it is not half as horrible as it gets credit for being.

There is no place to live and everthing that has been available is way over priced. Odessa has a huge amount of trash and is overall a very ugly town...which makes no sense that all housing is priced so unreasonably...When the oil boom is over the resale value will be nothing!! The same thing that happened during the last boom.
