Texas has over 1000 school systems. It is not reasonable to characterize Texas schools as a unit. There are many outstanding schools and school districts in Texas, offset by some very weak or poor ones.

BTW - what does it mean - Texas has one of the worst school systems in the state?

I don't really think you know what you're talking about. There is no "complete removal of funding." What is likely to happen (but hasn't happened yet) is that the state funding distributed to school districts will be cut. Local funding remains in place, though it is probably not sufficient for most school districts. So the K-12 schools face financial pressure, in some cases significant. But so are many others in the US.

I think too much is being made here of conservative vs. liberal. Just because Houston has a lesbian mayor doesn't mean it is liberal. There is no city in Texas that has politics like San Francisco, Portland, or Berkeley.

It should be easy and comfortable for a "conservative" from San Diego to live almost anywhere in Texas. As long as you don't put signs in the yard proclaiming your political beliefs you will generally be OK.

The overall political posture of Texas is conservative, even the Austin area. Texans still like guns, low taxes, and favor modest government services.

BTW - I think Central Texas includes Austin. Austin is also in the Hill Country.

Texas faces a non-trivial budget deficit for the next budget (two years). However Texas' financial situation doesn't compare to California - which faces a deficit equal to Texas but for a single budget year. In other words their deficit is almost twice as big. Oh - and California has more than 1 million more unemployed people than Texas does.

California also carries a significant debt and a time bomb of pension payouts. Texas has $8B in its "rainy day fund" and has comparatively small pension burdens.

The situation is not even close to being comparable.

San Jose is the safest large city in the U.S. and San Diego is a very close second. The rest trail far behind. Folks start businesses in San Diego everyday, one tech start-up every day of the year. Maybe your dad's business can't make it here. No problem there and if you want to join him that's great and sounds like fun. But I can't allow you to spread false information about CA and SD. Good luck to you!
Thank you I'm from San Diego and live in Texas, but after reading the OP I figured why waste my time.

Definitely move to Central TX. Don't even look at other parts of the state, move to the Hill Country and don't look back.

Stan and usc,

Sorry, I guess I forgot that I wasn't allowed to have my own opinion!?!

You are right. SD county is conservative and rural (in parts), however, I am fed up with this state and the way that it has been run. I am not one that thinks that Texas won't have any problems, but I think that I (my family included) could be happier there. Therefore I was trying to find info on what area(s) I would like to move to.

I would look at it this way. On a map draw a line up I-35 north and south and another line along I-20 west from Ft. Worth. Look for somewhere west of that I-35 line and south of the I-20 line.

Please. Austin is NOT liberal! The only liberal part of Austin is the area around the University. There is NO city that is truly Liberal in Texas, although the major cities have a good smattering of progressives.

You're painting with too broad of a brush. There are plenty of conservatives in the Dallas and Houston areas.

I wasn't slamming you. I was only correcting some of your mis-information. Like I said, good luck!
