I present to you typical East Texas scenery.

These were taken today just 20 miles south of where I live in Tyler, which is exactly 90 miles between both Dallas & Shreveport.

Love's Lookout:

Very nice pics! I have said it many times......Cherokee County might be the prettiest county in East Texas! The drive between Bullard and Alto on US 69 is quite scenic. Very Ozark-like at times!

Good pics, Matt.

To add, not all -- not much, in fact -- of Texas is a flat, boring, wasteland, in any case.

I will forever maintain that that stereotypical image of cactus, tumbleweeds and deserts being "typical Texas", are rooted in the old Hollywood western movies which were actually filmed in southern Arizona and California (cheap land the movie studios bought/rented to film).

In fact, in reflection, I wouldn't even call them "stereotypical"...as stereotypes at least usually contain some core of truth. Better designation would be "false imagery."

Just to note, relating to the pics of East Texas? One of the most -- if not THE most -- beautiful scenes I ever witnessed -- I'll try and post the picture when I find it again -- was at Caddo Lake during a freeze typical of what lots of us are getting now.

The cypress and pines along Big Cypress Bayou were coated with a glaze of ice. As the sun set, the goldish tint thru the cloud cover striking the silver-gilt icicles gave the whole world a silent, magical, appearance.

We just all sat out there and didn't say much to each other, just took it all in. A poignant thing (or so it seemed) was that we had a CD player out on the dock with us, and were listening to some golden oldies hits of the 70's. One of them was ELO's "Strange Magic" (anybody remember that one?)

It sure seemed to fit...

Oh well *breaking out of spell here*...good thread and great posts, Matt.

Great and refreshing pictures Matt. Thanks for the greenery with all of this wintry weather.

While these pictures are beautiful, these aren't the most compelling pictures for the those who believe Texas is flat. Perhaps, maybe some pics of West TX, Big Bend, or the cliffs of the Davis Mountains might persuade some.

Considering the tree line is some 50-80 feet high above ground level, I believe Tyler & East Texas' hills are damn impressive. Almost like what you'd find down around Austin & the Texas Hill Country.

The sheer amount of greenery alone is pretty awesome when 75-80% of the state is brown & dead looking right now.

South Tyler looking north along HWY 69 (Broadway) towards Uptown & Downtown off in the distance. Looks pretty hilly to me...
