It's time for a change and my husband and I are searching for the perfect town to start searching for jobs and building a life.

About us: We're 26, married for 3 years, and currently reside in East Texas. We aren't major party people, but enjoy a night out (usually a country western dance hall) once in awhile. I like to shop, he likes to hunt and fish.

What we're looking for: He is finishing his firefighter and EMT certification as we speak. We're looking for a town with a great firehouse. I teach English, and would like to work for a school with a good reputation and may sub after he finds a job. We're looking for a town where we can live more than 12 feet from our neighbor, but also be less than an hour drive to a mall. Maybe more like half an hour.

Decent housing prices, a nice town with some outdoorsy stuff to do, and a great place to raise a family and I'm game for checking it out.

It does need to be somewhere in central Texas. Dallas/Ft. Worth is out (although I would love it) and Houston is out. South of Brenham and more than an hour or two west of Austin is too far, also.

Suggestions?

Temple/Belton, or Waco. I don't think most Texans realize how much these places have grown, or how busy they actually are.

Bryan/College Station is affordable, definitely has C/W dancing, and there are surely lots of outdoorsy things nearby. Yes there are a lot of college students running around, but that keeps the town lively. A&M Consolidated is a good school district.

I had family that lived in that area for quite some time. I should go visit, it's been a long time since I've been there.

We love NB. My DH would move there in a heartbeat. We're definitely looking in that area, and there are plenty of jobs!

I love that College Station has everything. I don't mind dealing with lots of college kids, and I wouldn't mind bringin up my kids near such a great school. (-: Thanks for the suggestion.

I second CptnRn about NB! You might also want to consider northern and eastern Williamson County (on the edge of the Austin metro). I suggest you look into towns like Liberty Hill, Jarrell, Granger, and Taylor. (Don't forget Elgin as well!) There is also a lot of home development in the unincorporated county land. Suburban shopping centers in Leander, Cedar Park, Georgetown, and Round Rock would be in a 30 minutes drive. Good luck!

You may want to consider Boerne or Kerrville, just NW of SATX, just of I-10.
