I went to school in Gainesville. Have lunch or dinner at the Swamp. Good food and great atmosphere with the campus and the stadium across the street.

Can't tell you about the nightlife since I haven't been back in years and it changes all the time.

Good Luck in Ft. Lauderdale. Born and raised around there but work transferred me to Houston about 5 years ago. Never though I was going to leave.

Marfa Texas, a slight diversion from IH-10, it is easily the most interesting place in West Texas. http://our.tentativetimes.net/marfa/ It will add only 47 miles to your trip.

There are numerous places to stay but this one looks interesting. http://www.hotelpaisano.com/

Marfa, Texas Chamber of Commerce - Lodging (http://www.marfacc.com/directory/lodging2.php - broken link)

Do you think Alpine or Marathon would be worth the detour off of the I-10?

There is nothing worth detouring to Marathon for - NOTHING! You can see the same sort of country by simply staying on IH-10.

If you have time to dawdle, then making the Ft. Davis, Marfa, Alpine loop before returning to IH-10 might be of interest. All three towns are within the Davis Mountains and considered touristy - as that term is loosely applied to west Texas.

The old western fort at Ft. Davis is nicely restored and there is a celestial observatory that can be visited/toured. Marfa has a number of art museums founded by the late minimalist artist Donald Judd. Alpine feels like a "return to the old west" - very "cowboy." Sul Ross State U. is the main feature of Alpine.

From Marfa you can easily drive back to I-10 going thru either of those places.

Alpine is oK, I don't think Marathon offers much. By far the most interesting drive back would be through Fort Davis and the Davis Mountains.

If you are up for a scenic drive, on a winding road, leave I-10 on Hwy 118, it goes past MacDonald Observatory, to Fort Davis Park where you could stay at the Indian Lodge, then drive back to I-10 through more of the Davis Mountains on Hwy 17.

TPWD: Davis Mountains State Park
See the movie on that page.

The Indian Lodge, an adobe walled hotel, would be a really nice place to stay, and the $95 rate isn't too bad. TPWD: Indian Lodge

Sanderson has a nice, friendly, cheap, mom/pop motel with a very impressive Snake Zoo in the lobby. Its the town where they filmed "No Country for Old Men".
