Warning: Proposed School Cuts are 'Just the Beginning' | WOAI LOCAL NEWS - News Radio 1200 WOAI San Antonio Texas

Quote:
The major cuts which are planned for Texas public schools are just the first in a long line of cuts which will whittle away at school funding over the coming six years, 1200 WOAI news reports state lawmakers have been told.

<snip>

"And so we will not get back to what today's current law formula will be until sometime after 2017," West said.
The quote is from State Sen. Royce West (D-Dallas).

The schools will have less money during those 5 years, while the state's population is expected to continue to grow during that time. To ease the burden on schools in this lower-funding environment, the article says that Sen. West wants to reduce the rules and mandates on schools, such as minimum class sizes, and English as a Second Language programs.

I had read something a while back saying something to the effect that the cuts made this year were not a one time thing...that the school districts could expect the same level of funding next year...I havent heard anything since then so I dismissed it...but now...

Our state government is embarrassing to our state, and this is coming from someone who once used to claim being politically moderate. Thank you Texas, because of you I'm becoming more liberal at an alarmingly fast pace because I cant stand our legislature & government in general!

Thanks for the source Bo.

A few things I want to note about this is that we already have the worst high school graduation rate in the entire country, and its not even that the state's population is gaining from migration that worries me, its the fact that nearly 60% of any population gain (in the United States) is compromised from births. Those are kids that will grow into the sufferings of a troubled state education system, its haunting how Texas continuously shows (and does) to show it doesn't care about our education as much as other things.

The state uses our money for so much that can take cuts, but education is something that's needed all throughout the state. It's how we create brain power, and Texas is starting to follow the mold of Florida now and go the ways of ruining entire generations worth of people by the quality of education they'll receive.

I love Texas, but the politics is just absolutely embarrassing at this point, in my opinion.
