I am a first generation Texan. My parents moved here from Pittsburgh in the summer of 1980, and I was born a few months later. My paternal grandmothers side is of English heritage has been in the US since the 1600s, they were early colonists in Massachusetts, and then moved on the Pennsylvania sometime in the late 1700's, and much of that family still resides there today. Despite that the majority of my bloodline is mostly German. Moms side is all German, and dads side has German, Polish, and Italian mixed in with the English.

Being a first generation Texan with such strong roots in another region I never became familiar with southern food growing up. I don't much care for fired food, except for chicken. I hate, hate BBQ, both wet and dry. Sweet tea and cold are gross to me. Perhaps its the Brit in me but I like my tea hot with little to no sugar. That being said I did marry a man from a very southern family. He keeps plenty of sweet tea at the house, though I wont touch it. I still won'
t forget the day he asked me to make Frito Pie and I had no idea what it was. I had heard of it, but had never seen it or eaten. Thank goodness for the internet cause there would have been a disaster if I had to wing it and guess. :P

My original ancestors came from Germany (mother's side) and Ireland (father's side). My original German ancestors on my mother's side of the family lived somewhere on the east coast after immigrating to the U.S. from Germany. Most of their descendents moved to Ohio and from there they moved to Texas at some point later on. On my father's side, I'm not sure where the original Irish settlers landed in the U.S. but almost all of them ended up in Missouri at some point (my father is from Missouri). I was born in Texas a few generations after my mother's family in Ohio moved down here to Texas. Since some of my ancestors lived on the east coast for a short time after immigrating here from Germany, I guess I have a tiny little bit of yankee blood in me....lol.

YouTube - Texas Our Texas

I've posted this elsewhere. To me it says it all. I love my native state, even if for personal and political reasons I will never live there again. But I earnestly wish Texas well, just as I do the United States of America. I think this particular video of Texas children has a lot to say about the future of the State we hold dear. God bless You Texas and keep you always strong.

In England all Americans are called "Yank."

There was a saying in England during WWII:

The Yanks are over paid, over sexed and over here.
