My partner and I are looking to move to Texas this Summer. Was wondering if San Marcos is gay friendly and I'm not just talking about the college students that attend there. Also what is there to do there? And how would you rate the schools? Any information is greatly appreciated.

The whole town? I don't think that's possible anywhere. But we're talking Texas, so that's even more so. I can't think of any Texas town being open or friendly to that. Maybe other areas of the US would be better choices (San Francisco, Orlando, etc.)

Austin, Houston, and Dallas have large gay communities. I've heard Montrose in Houston is a really nice gay neighborhood, but it's expensive.

I think that you guys would be accepted here for sure. All of the locals are really cool and mostly river bums. I would suggest Austin if its in your budget though because it is less traditional and the schools are better. I would suggest living there more than San Marcos but we would be happy to have you.

San Marcos is a great town. It seems like Austin-lite, and I expect some day it will be widely recognized as such. The openly-gay people I've seen there looked like they were fitting right in, at places like the Burger King.

As for Texas---well, even here in Victoria, there are gays, and I've never heard of any of them ever having any problems with the locals.

The common myth about Texas is we hate gays and they're unacceptable here.

Sunderpig is just spreading the ignorance with his post. Anyways, the truth is Houston, Dallas, and Austin [I guess San Antonio too] have plenty of gays and surprisingly smaller Texas cities to. Places like Killeen, Waco, Lubbock, and others don't have gay clubs/bars for nothing.

Your chances of being shot, killed, lynched, beat are just as likely as anywhere else. Any town with a metropolitan area of at least 150,000+ and higher will work. However, Houston, Dallas and Austin would be your best picks.

You hear more about gays getting beat in places like NYC or LA more than here in Texas.

The Mayor of Houston is a lesbian, also nearly half my co-workers are either gay or bisexual in which I have no problem with.

I suggest you post your question in the San Antonio forum too, given San Marcos is halfway between SA and Austin. I've seen similar posts many there and my perception is that gays and non-gays say SA is also very accepting.

Oh for Pete's sake, Texas is fine for gays - just like anyplace else. Intolerance is becoming socially UNacceptable. I live in a very small town in Texas and know of two gay couples who are very happily settled here.
