I have recently received an offer for a new career in Garland Texas. My wife and I have 2 children (ages 2 and 5) and are very interested in relocating to north Dallas. We currently own a single family home in a suburb of St. Paul Minnesota. We are moving to get rid of our Minnesota winter and pursue a better career. We love everything else about the state and the community we live and we are hoping to find something just like it in Texas. We have a few cities picked out to visit at the end of this month; Rockwall, Richardson, Garland, Sachse, Wylie and Rowlett. I ordered them by preference according to what I already know about them from threads and city-data. From what I can tell Rockwall is the closest match to our hometown of Cottage Grove Minnesota, besides the fact that it has a few more sex offenders. I would like to keep my commute to 20 minutes or less with or without traffic. Our budget consists of selling our home for around 200K and buying for less so that my wife can stay home with the 2 children. The housing we would be looking for would have to be in the area of 160K to 180K and a minimum of 3 bedrooms with 2 baths. So my questions are…Is one of these cities a better fit for us than the others? Does anyone have any ideas what the best community would be to raise children and have a social life with other young parents? Should we be concerned about the high amount of sex offenders in Texas? What should be some of my focal points for my visit to Garland at the end of this month? Any advice you can give us would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for your time. We really appreciate it!

We moved down to the San Antonio area last summer from Stillwater, MN. You will LOVE the weather! I couldn't help but smile all through March and April while I enjoyed highs in the 70's and 80's and my friends back home were cursing the snow and frigid temperatures. I hope you have better luck than we did selling your house, the housing market was brutal last year and we took a huge hit.

As for s#x offenders, much of that information tends to be online (i.e. as to where they are located). If you have narrowed down the area you are interested in, you might be able to get online and fine-tune the desired area.

Rockwall sounds like what you're looking for. Rockwall is a quickly growing area here, and depending where in the Rockwall area you decide to live, will put you around 30 minutes commuting time from Garland, depending on traffic and time of day. Rockwall offers many family-oriented activities, i.e., movies, libraries, lake activities, and fairly good schools from what I've observed.

You'll find plenty of nice homes in your price range, 1600 - 2400 sq ft. or so, in good neighborhoods. In regard to the sex offender issues, I think Texas is one of the better states with offender tracking and public information regarding registered sex offenders. The state website even has their photo's, address, and work locations online for public view. BTW, it's not the one's who are registered to be concerned with, it's the one's who haven't been caught and convicted to worry about, the same as any state.

Good luck with your move south.

Default Thanks!

Thanks to everyone for your replies. They are definately comforting and helpful in this time of desicion making. As far as the SO go, i have seen some major variations in numbers so i will stick with the numbers that make most sense and tell you that there are no more SO in Texas than there are in MN. Thanks again!
