Cows killing rattlers! LOL good one never seen it happen and we have a pretty good mean bull and he shys away from rattlers. Who ever owns the cows that you see might be switching pastures every month or so thatis why you may not see them for awhile. Also the cows most likely walk away cause 1) they don't know you and you have no food and 2) you might be walking in their blind spot which for them is dead straight. Their eyes are more to the sides so there is a sweet spot dead on that does not get much. (at least thats what pappy always told me!

Pioneer, you think that is why the property owner sold the property? Does Texas have a disclosure law?

Sounds like you need to call the pros to come take a look P8 at your land. Besides the fact that snakes look at your porch as one huge rock O'warmth you might have a den somewhere around.

Please tell me more about the weather that you don't like in Texas. We're considering Austin, but the weather could be a deal-breaker. We're in Southern California-Temecula- if you know it. It get HOT here in the summer- it's been 100 degrees for at least a month now. (Which is unusual for that long but nonetheless it's been that way- last summer also!) I'm really wondering how HOT and how HUMID Austin in particular is. Weeks and months of hellish weather? Or maybe just a few weeks and then it's do-able? Weather websites give me vague numbers but w/o the humidity index I don't know really what it feels like. I mean... do you walk outside and your shirt is wet?

In a word, VERY. They are in a drought situation, and the temps have been in the upper 90s and 100s all summer long--and part of the spring, too.

Sis lives about 20 miles out of south Austin...and they are into water rationing big time right now. Yes, this summer has been hotter than normal for the area, but Austin is always very hot and very humid anyway.

Sorry. This is not my "area of expertise". What's P8? I NEED all the help I can get. We love it here and don't want this fear to chase us away.

Answer about the weather 20 mins. of Abilene is dry... sunny and happy....wonderful....sometimes chilly... sometimes hot....some snow (special when we are lucky enough to get it) I actually like it.. better (in my opinion) than FL (near Tampa)- where I lived before now.

I can relate. Silly me. I talked to a Biologist at the TX Parks wildlife- She advised getting the big ole rock off the property and a donkey. She says that donkies "won't have" rattlesnakes and they are excellent for my prob. What do ya think?
