What part of Texas would offer the best opportunities for an RN and also a nice suburban area without HOA (maintenance) fees for purchasing a nice house? If some good fishing/hunting was close by would be a big plus. Thanks.

Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antionio have the biggest hospitals. What is your specialty?

Almost all of Texas has fishing and hunting within a few hours' drive. The only exceptions are far west Texas, such as El Paso and Midland/Odessa, since there are no lakes there.

Fishing in the Dallas/FW area is/can be quite crowded. I'd go to Houston so as to get involved in the fantastic coastal fishing. Of course the best bass fishing in the US is on the Rio Grande impoundment, Lake Falcon!

Plenty of nursing jobs in Houston. I work in Beaumont (critical care) but it is a small market. Best fishing in the state overall but then we have the most water too.

Unless you're wanting to live in the 'big city' you might consider Texoma Medical Center, about an hour north of Dallas.

Denison Hospital | Texoma Medical Center

TMC is between Sherman and Denison (they are really just one city), total pop. about 50,000, on Lake Texoma and Red River...not far from Oklahoma mountains hunting and camping.

Lake Texoma State Park | TravelOK.com - Oklahoma's Official Travel & Tourism Site

Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department

It is a new campus (old hospital, just a big new campus)....the other hospital in the area is small and old and most of the medical offices and clinics are moving to be around the new TMC and the physicians are moving their practices to TMC so it is growing and hiring. The salaries are not as high as Dallas or Houston, of course, but neither is the cost of living.....one of the most reasonably priced housing areas in Texas. Lots of small towns with good schools (recognized/exemplary) within 10-30 minutes easy commute, lots of small rural acreages available.

If you are wanting to be in a city, you might consider McKinney or Frisco.... large Dallas suburbs....rapidly growing - has 2-3 hospitals and many clincis and medical facilities. Mostly young people, new homes, but they do have an HOA attitude. If you wanted to live farther out, the commute into the suburbs from the rural areas to the north is not difficult.

Providing the McKinney area with acute care and specialty services. - Medical Center of McKinney

San Angelo (west Texas) is a town of about 90,000. We have two hospitals (Shannon and West Texas Community) along with many smaller clinics (most branches of the hospitals). My wife works as a nurse aide at a pediatric clinic.

It's rural, but has many city amenities (city symphony, civic arts theater, modern art museum, one indoor mall, several smaller strip malls, many chain restaurants as well as local, etc.). There's a university here (Angelo State University), which is part of the Texas Tech circuit.

If you want more info on the city, let me know. Otherwise, good luck with your search!

Look at Scott and White hospital in Temple, located in central Texas. Large hospital, with the Texas A&M medical school, and the Olin E. Teague VA hospital in close proximity. For fishing, you have 2 lakes in a 15-20 minute proximity. Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow. Both offer large mouth and small mouth bass, with Stillhouse being the better choice for the latter. Belton lake has white and hybrid bass, and you can find some stripers on Stillhouse. Good areas for dove hunting in the area, and you can find good deer hunting on the Fort Hood training areas. You have to register with range control on Ft. Hood, and then the various hunting areas are picked via lottery draw.

Lakeway just opened the brand new Lakeway Regional Medical Center. Many areas around here are not within HOA's. They're still building more of the medical offices so there will be plenty more RN jobs to come. We have Lake Travis right here, and you can hunt in under an hour.

You might want to read the thread in the Dallas forum regarding RN jobs......seems there is a real shortage of jobs in D/FW, especially for beginning nurses.
