I just met a barber who told me that he had a 60-ish friend who would have to move out of his gentrified neighborhood when retirement set in due to the very high property taxes that he will incur. Prop taxes are primarily for education funding. Haven’t taxpayers “paid their debt” to supporting education over a span of years already?!! I do realize that there is an Over 65 exemption, but it’s not a huge discount. If anything, why not make the people with kids pay a per kid surcharge to send their kids to public schools?

An educated populace increases the wellbeing and overall economic health of an entire community, including seniors. That's the simplistic answer.

If seniors were more willing to forego street repair, public hospitals, police protection and fire protection, in exchange for not paying taxes, that might make sense.

None of those items are provided for in school taxes. Those are covered by city & county taxes, which they still pay, as well.

I've been paying school taxes as a property owner since I was 21. It IS galling to know that I'll be paying them until the day I die, even though my kids attended schools for 12 years. And yet, each year, the schools cry poor - while the administrative staff grows larger, yet the teacher in the classroom is expected to do ever more.

Having said that......when we planned for retirement, we knew the taxes were going to be there, and as a result we budgeted for them. It's a shame the barber apparently didn't do so - but he's going to be facing school taxes wherever he goes.

Agreed. It sounded like OP doesn't want seniors to pay any property taxes. I know that the things I listed and a few more, like waterway projects and community colleges, are funded that way.

Not true. I was only referring to the school property portion of the taxes, which makes up the majority of the assessed taxes. I also think that churches should pay property taxes since they also benefit from city/county services and improvements.

If seniors shouldn't be forced to pay property tax neither should anybody else... (and I, for one, support this idea completely)
