I have used Public transportation in all 4 major cities and I would rank them as follows:

1. Houston C+
2. Dallas C
3. Austin D
4. San Antonio F

Houston has plenty of options and broad access with buses, park and rides, rapid routes and rail. Houston buses takes you to where you got to go, it just a pain getting there.

Dallas has lots of rail but the access leaves lot to be desired.

Austin has crappy bus system and ok on rail. I dunno why many people are suggesting Austin, it is very hard to get around Austin without a car unless you live in very few areas.

San Antonio is very large and has a very limited bus system.
too many areas are not served and the bus routes are just weird.

really? is it the same route proposed about 5 years ago along Fredricksburg to the med center???

SA needs improved transit to the airport and UTSA

Houston has a better bus system, Dallas has more extensive rail.

Austin and San Antonio shouldnt be considered in this discussion.

yeah, I dunno why people were mentioning Austin. Someone said that you can function without a car in Downtown Austin and East Austin, but you can do the same darn thing in just about any city.

with all the buses running almost 24 hrs a day on almost every single street in downtown Houston and Dallas, why is Austin better??

The fact of the matter is that the PT coverage in Austin is not as good as Houston and Dallas.

Yes; I never get the Austin answers considering the sprawl in Austin is worse than what you get in Houston and Dallas.

yeah, the core itself has an okay bus system, but so does everywhere else. outside the core the is a huge drop off unlike Houston and Dallas.

Holy crap! Did someone just say that sprawl in Austin is worse than Houston or Dallas? I'm not particularly keen on Austin and would much rather live in Houston, but Austin is a much more compact city than either of those two (though that's not saying much). I understand loving your city, but try to remain objective.

Austin is not a compact city and its sprawl is worse than Houston and Dallas. My city is Waco, but I'm living in Houston now.

Where are you getting that Austin has less sprawl??? I see completely different when there. If you're talking about the downtown area and surrounding; that's only a small part of Austin.

I never said Austin was a compact city. I said it was much more so than Houston or Dallas. There's not a single city in Texas that I would consider compact or walkable. However, I feel like Austin's core is more walkable and public transit friendly than Houston or Dallas' core. Now of course, outside the core it gets sprawly, but that's any Texas city. I don't see how one can possibly argue that any one of these three cities is better than another outside of the core.

Austin has some sprawl to it. But Houston and Dallas are grand masters of sprawl, and only one tier underneath LA, which is the undisputed king and inventor of sprawl.

Houston and Dallas do sprawl farther, but in terms of how the sprawl is developed??? Austin is worse imo.
