Last year the PAC-10 had 8 schools finish in the top 30 director's cup rankings:

1-Stanford
3-California
11-UCLA
14-USC
16-Arizona
21-Washington
27-Arizona State
30-Oregon

By contrast, the Big-12 had only 3 schools rank in the top 30.

8-Texas A&M
10-Oklahoma
12-Texas

The next 3 best schools in the Big-12 were

32-Oklahoma State
33-Nebraska (now with the Big-10)
35-Baylor

You can find the complete rankings for the current and previous years here:

The ACC actually looks like one of the strongest overall conferences in addition to the PAC-10 with 4 teams in the top 10 of last year's rankings.
The Big Ten had six teams in the top 30, including Ohio State at #2. Half of their conference had teams in the top 30.

Stanford always wins because they offer more sports programs than any other school:

Men's -
Baseball
Basketball
Cross Country
Fencing
Football
Golf
Gymnastics
Rowing
Sailing
Soccer
Swimming & Diving
Tennis
Track & Field
Volleyball
Water Polo
Wrestling

OlympicsThere is no big interest here in half those "sports".

There may not be big interest in a lot of the minor sports around here but lots of college athletes still participate in these sports, even in Texas. That's one reason why it is somewhat ridiculous for Texas schools to be joining far-flung conferences just for Football dollars. TCU, for example, is joining the Big-East. Basically every one of their away games or meets in every sport is going to be 1000+ miles away. I think the NEAREST Big East school to TCU is Louisville, which is 900 miles away and most likely doesn't have much in the way of direct air connections. Most of the rest of the Big East schools are 1500+ miles away. How's that going to work for things like rowing and track?

I thought I saw A&M had equestrian one time and I thought, "Hmm, I guess it fits."
