Construction Jobs
Texas as a whole is doing much better in jobs in comparison to the nation. I don't remember what source but metro Houston was ranked number 1 not to long ago in numerical job growth. A big part is due to energy however. You can't go wrong in any Texas city as far as jobs. If you narrow it down to construction jobs however I would rank San Antonio first and I have no idea who follows from the other cities. They're all pretty strong.

1. San Antonio 2. Everyone else

Recreation
Austin is hands down the best major city for outdoor activites followed closely by San Antonio. Here in the Dallas area Grapevine is a great outdoors city but mainly because of the lakes. In the Grand Prairie and Cedar Hill area there are both lakes and hills with natural walking trails kind of like the hill country, but this area lacks public transportation. The Great Trinity Forest has lots of trails. Houston is close by the gulf which is a great amenity but it falls short on hiking activities. Based on what your looking for I would rank them like this.

1. Austin 2. San Antonio 3. Dallas 4. Houston

Transportation
Dallas has the best transportation. Houston follows closely with it's extensive bus system. San Antonio and Austin both fall short on this. Corpus Christi as well.

1. Dallas 2. Houston 3. San Antonio 4. Austin

It really depends on what is a bigger priority to you but if they're equal I am not surprised San Antonio leads. Even though transportation is not as good as in Houston or Dallas, it's strong in outdoor activities and construction jobs.
