It might just be you and me, but I agree. It's so disappointing, since it's relatively close.

well it's not Hawaii or Miami beach, but parts of Port Aransas and parts of SP Island are quite nice.
both are not close though, even once you get there you still have to do some driving to get to the nicer spots.

Maybe I don't expect much from a Gulf Coast beach - but the beach I went to near Corpus wasn't bad. It was nicer than some I've been to.

They're not great, but they're not horrible. It's due to its location in the Gulf. The beaches on the ocean are naturally more attractive. Really doesn't have anything to do with the town.

Panama City (also Gulf, but better location) is one of the most beautiful beaches in the US, but the town's a dump.

If you've seen other beaches in other parts of the world, then yes, Texas beaches leave a lot to be desired. Brown water, seaweed and overcrowding seem to be the calling cards of Port Aransas, South Padre and Corpus these days. I haven't had a great TX beach experience in several years.

California and Florida are blessed to have some incredible beaches, many of which are still relatively quiet and serene. With that much coastline, there's bound to be a few hidden treasure spots here and there.

That being said, it's all we've got here, so it could be worse. I much prefer to get out on a lake if there's a choice involved.

I love S. Padre Island but your post brings back fond memories of the trips I've enjoyed at Pajaro Dunes in Monterey Bay! So quiet and peaceful and all kinds of driftwood.

I love our beaches and wouldn't change them for anything. Much of our coastline is unspoiled and undeveloped. It may not be the turquoise water that you see in the Caribbean or off of Florida, but it's clean (despite the sometimes brownish-green-blue color) for the most part. Hurricane Ike actually changed Galveston's water color (for the better) and until the natural flow from the Mississippi is restored, it will probably stay changed for a while.

Galveston has done much to change their beaches, even importing sand from elsewhere. Stewart Beach is still my fave... but the island itself is wonderful--an historical treasure.
