Where are you driving from? Houston? Austin? San Antonio? Dallas/FW? El Paso? NYC?

Yes, take your immigration documents and drivers license, plus proof of insurance and registration for the car. You won't be asked to show them unless you get stopped for some reason, but it's best to have them just in case. It also wouldn't hurt to have your health insurance information (if you have any) and a contact number for emergencies.

In the USA, it is never legally necessary to show police officers any proof of your identity. However, if you are driving a car, it is necessary to have your drivers license, as well as the car registration certificate and proof of insurance.

However, it is a very good idea to have all necessary papers with you that will prove that you are legally in the USA, such as passport and immigration status papers. These can be left at home if you are just out shopping in your own town, but if you are traveling, a situation might arise in which you could need to have them.

If you have health insurance, you should have your insurance information, in case you need medical services. Just carry with you the things you would need in your own country, such as credit cards, contact phone numbers of friends, etc.

Also, if you want to drink or buy tobacco, you might be asked for a photo-id that shows your date of birth in English.

For some reason, I always thought foreign nationals were supposed to carry some kind of identification and proof of immigration status, but not US citizens. At any rate, there are some immigration agents in parts of New Mexico and once in a while they check someone out.

It's very possible to end up going through one of the checkpoints that are 80 miles inside the border and a foreign citizen would best be able to prove he/she is here legally.
