We are interested in retiring somewhere warmer & drier than our Chicagoland area. Planning a trip in 3 months, to both the Hill Country of Texas, and the Rim Country of Arizona (Payson/Prescott). Any comments are appreciated.

Take a look at the Texas Travel Guide for some info on the Hill Country

Arizona obviously isn't, but many parts of the Texas Hill Country can get rather humid, despite the higher elevations of some places.

Those two areas don't have much in common. Depending on what you're looking for, a choice should be fairly obvious.

Very different places. If you want a dry climate in Texas, you'd need to look at West Texas. Arizona has a dry climate most of the year but monsoon season (basically July-September) it gets humid with temperatures often reaching well above 100 degrees in much of the state (the mountain areas excepted).

Either one will have a milder climate than where you currently live. Why not visit both during different times of the year before making any decision?

The Texas Hill Country won't give you an average of 24 inches of snow each year. The THC might give you tornadoes and definitely much heat and humidity.

The Prescott area was amazing when I worked there last year for about a week. Sedona and that whole area is very beautiful. That area seems to be more of a retirement community too. I'd choose that area over the hill country although the hill country is nice too.

I concur. I love Arizona. So much outdoor beauty to behold and play in. Grand Canyon is about 2 and a half hours away, Sedona about 1 and a half hours from Prescott. Head south to Phoenix if you need a large city in 2 hours. You will have great views of the mountains and there is a gem of a lake/park called Watson Lake that is surrounded by neat boulder/rock formations. Given the choice, I would pick Prescott area in a heartbeat but visit both and see which one you prefer.

The farther West you go in the Hill Country, the drier is going to be and also the more likely you'll get snow in winter.

I just looked at some images of Watson Lake. It is quite lovely. Prescott seems to be growing by leaps and bounds and that's something I'm definitely not looking for. Do you know of any really small towns in that area? I'm thinking of relocating to VA or ID, but I'd consider just about anything at this point as long as the summers are NOTHING like Texas.
