I'm asking this question because I recently read about the Laredo mother who shot herself and her kids because she could not receive food stamps.

Here is the article

I noticed in the article, they talk about the daughter updated her status on facebook while being held hostage by her mother. She wrote status such as "may die 2day" and "tear gas seriously" & "im bored". Her generally lax attitude toward what was happening saddened and shocked me because it made me remember how much my own friends from Texas seem to be desensitized by murders and deaths.

When I first lived in San Antonio, I was continually shocked and horrified at the stories the kids and adults would tell me about what happened to them or their families regarding some fight or situation that involved lots of blood and being close to death. Getting stabbed, having head thrown on concrete, being shot, etc. things like that. I never understood how this wasn't shocking to anyone else. And then I started watching KSAT and I was horrified by what was happening in my own city! Stories like a woman chopping off her kid's heads, babies being put in the microwave, and etc. It was disgusting! And it doesn't matter how many times it happens, I noticed almost every Texan I have ever known has a passe attitude about it all. They are never too shocked or horrified about anything I think from major desensitization. Has anyone else but me noticed?

Agreed. I think its just the circle the OP hangs in is why he/she is noticing this. Whenever I see or hear a morbid news story, and I see others reactions to it, I see shock and horror on their faces as well as my own.
