I know many of y'all will remember fellow Texan Dobie Gray, who passed away just the other day. I just read about it today, and no way could I not write -- in my own inept way -- something about this soul music icon.

For many of us of the 70's, his forever signature song was "Drift Away" (a video posted below with lyrics). I was a freshman in high school when I first heard it, and I loved it from the very first. It still today remains my favorite pop song of all time. At my latest high school reunion, that was one of those played, and we all clapped along to the beat, boys (pun intended). It was a memorable moment...

I kinda feel like I have lost a very good and old friend. Sorta like a pen pal I never had the honor of meeting, but one whose poety, songs and words, always moved me and to just...drift away...

RIP, Dobie Gray. Lots of us will always believe in your song.

Dobie gray- drift away - YouTube

Day after day, I'm more confused
Yet I look for the light through the pourin' rain
You know that's a game that I hate to loose
And I'm feelin' the strain
Ain't it a shame

Oh, give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock n roll
And drift away
Oh, give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock n roll
And drift away

Beginnin' to think that I'm wastin' time
I don't understand the things I do
The world outside looks so unkind
Now I'm countin' on you
To carry me through

Oh, give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock n roll
And drift away
Yea, give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock n roll
And drift away

And when my mind is free
You know a melody can move me
And when I'm feelin' blue
The guitar's comin' through
To soothe me

Thanks for the joy that you've given me
I want you to know I believe in your song
And rhythm and rhyme and harmony
You help me along
Makin' me strong

Oh, give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock n roll
And drift away
Give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock n roll
And drift away

Oh-ho, ah-no
Give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock n roll
And drift away

Hey, hey, hey, yeah
Give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock n roll
And drift away

Na, Na, now won't ya
Won't ya take me
Oh-ha, take me

RIP Mr Gray. Please don't forget that Dobie had a great 1965 hit called The "In" Crowd too.:-)

His melody moved us, indeed.

Thanks, Reb for honoring such a fine musician, and a fine human being. He left much of his estate to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

This is sad news. I've sang along to his songs many times and always felt so much better after hearing them. Reb, You are so right, he gave us much joy!

Default Another Version

I apologize that the earlier video link did not come out well. It seems to "double-track" quite a bit. Which (*smiles*) I suppose Dobie Gray might actually appreciate as this was a common occurance on 8-track tapes of the early 70's!

Here is one that might play quite a bit better:

Drift Away-Dobie Gray Lyrics - YouTube

CameroGuy and Pontificator? Y'all mentioned, respectively, his 1965 hit "In Crowd" and his leaving much of his estate to the St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital. Here is an article in the LA Times which mentions both facts:

Dobie Gray obituary; 'Drift Away' singer was 71 - Los Angeles Times

And yep, like you, LoneStar2007, I sang along to that song countless times. And would sometime just listen to it over and over!

That is a shock. I thought his version of The In Crowd was fabulous, although I liked the Ramsey Lewis instrumental take on it as well. R.I.P., Dobie.
