Apparently you're misinformed, TJ's HQ is in Dallas.

I do recall that story - it was quite sad. What a deranged man he was.

I asked for linguica at Central Market once and they pointed me to chorizo. No no NO!!!

Isn't it difficult to find linguica in most cities across the U.S.? The bay area has a large number of Portuguese that settled there (the Catholic church in Santa Clara even has special masses in Portuguese) and that explains it there. I don't even remember seeing much linguica in Southern California except for Point Loma in San Diego where again, a lot of Portuguese settled. I've heard it's popular in Hawaii too, but I'm not sure why. I went to a wedding in San Jose and linguica was in almost every single dish served. I expected to see it in the cake.

I think it's pretty hard to find linguica in your average grocery store and although I'm disappointed that I can't buy it here, I'm certainly not surprised. It's a pretty regional item. I'm Hawaiian-Portuguese myself, so naturally linguica has been as common a food item in our home as bacon is elsewhere my entire life. The reason so many Hawaiians eat linguica is because there are so many Portuguese in Hawaii ... just like the Bay Area and New England.

My Austin-born hubby didn't know a thing about Portuguese people (except "they're fantastic New World explorers" ... lol) until he moved to the Bay Area. He warned me when we moved back here that I was going to have a mighty hard time finding my favorite ethnic dishes like linguica, lau lau, poi, etc ... and he was right. BBQ and kick-ass Tex Mex almost entirely make up for that, but Thank God for mail order and visits back home, too.

My wife's mom is Portuguese, grew up in San Leandro, CA and are always looking for Linguica. They actually order it from a place in Cali that ships it to Dallas. I now live in NYC so we head over to Newark, NJ which has a huge Portuguese community for my Linguica fix (wife doesn't eat pork). If you ever get your hands on good Linguica, try smoking it for a few hours like any Elgin sausage and it is plain awesome. We smoked it along with some brisket, best of both worlds.

This place has amazing Linguica and they ship anywhere in the U.S. too.

Ok, rather than complaining or reminiscing, let's do something about it! If you go to the link below, under the Contact Trader Joe's section on the lower right, there is a box that says Product Information. If you click on the arrow next to that, they have Location Requests. If enough Austinites (and potential Austinites) request a location in the Austin area, maybe they'll look into it a bit more? As my 6 year old says, "It doesn't hurt to ask."

Trader Joe's
As an Austinite and a half-Texan, why would I want Trader Joe's around? Wouldn't that just bring more Californians?

I heard a story on NPR this morning that said that Trader Joe's is on the cover of the recent issue of Fortune Magazine. TJ's apparently had $8 billion is sales in 2009, which is pretty astounding. To give you a perspective, that's more than Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

You'd think that with TJ's aggressive expansion that they would have at least opened 1 store in Texas now - maybe in Dallas or Houston. I don't know why they've ignored Texas. They would be a nice alternative to Whole Foods' sky-high prices.

That's why. TJ's or not, Californians are coming either way. And Mid-Westerners and even us Yankees. Change is life - embrace it!
