Dallas' Job Growth Leads Texas in August 2015

Dallas-Plano-Irving Metro: +7,300
Austin-Round Rock MSA: +1,200
San Antonio-New Braunfels MSA: -1,000
Ft. Worth-Arlington Metro: -2,300
Houston-The Woodlands-Sugarland MSA: -11,800

The Dallas metro had very good job growth numbers in August 2015 despite the oil and gas slowdown hitting the State; Dallas and its metro led the State in net job growth for the month.

Austin MSA had positive net job growth as well, albeit smaller.

San Antonio MSA, Ft. Worth/Arlington metro and Houston MSA all showed net job losses with Houston suffering a substantial loss.

In fact, one could say that out of the 13,700 jobs lost at the State level for Texas during August 2015, Houston accounts for almost the entirety of those job losses.

Dallas' diversification and relatively low reliance on oil and gas is keeping its employment and population growth surging while oil and gas dependent cities are lagging.

Ft. Worth is also suffering, like Houston, due to its larger dependence on oil and gas.

Strong job growth in the Dallas area brings more people and more people bring yet more companies because of the large, diverse and rapidly growing workforce; the two are feeding off each other.

The shift of economic power, employment and population growth in Texas seems to have decidedly moved to North Texas with Dallas and its metro as its epicenter.

It appears without a doubt that Dallas is now Texas' most vibrant economic engine.

According to this article oil/gas accounts for almost 1% of employement in DFW:

Still no oil price impact for D-FW real estate
Quote:
“Given the diverse industry base of Dallas-Ft. Worth and the energy sector’s 1.1 percent share of metro employment, any economic impact from low oil prices is expected to be marginal on a local level,” Michael Caffey, executive managing director with CBRE, said in the report. “This means commercial real estate occupancy sees minimal effects as our region looks to other industries like finance, insurance, wholesale trade and transportation for growth.”

Those employment numbers aren't seasonally adjusted meaning those in the tourism industry at say summer only theme parks that close at the end of summer are being counted. I imagine once they are adjusted San Antonio will be even or have a gain.

“It’s been unanimously approved by our board and it’s moving very quickly,” McKeon, executive vice president, chief strategy officer and chief operating officer of the Texas Medical Center, said at an investor conference hosted by Midway, at Hotel Sorella in CityCentre.

A “collaborative development agreement” is expected to be completed soon, he added, and groundbreaking could start in the first quarter of next year.

It would house the University of Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor College of Medicine and MD Anderson Cancer Center as its anchors.

“All in all, it’s about a $2 billion play,” McKeon said.
Texas Medical Center moves forward with ambitious research project - Prime Property

A top Texas Medical Center executive described a plan Thursday for a major medical research campus that would bring together four institutions and contain multiple components, including hotel rooms, restaurants and bars, greenspace and an enormous plaza shaped like a double helix, a nod to the medical description of intertwining strands of DNA.

The origins of the project began at least a year ago when McKeon said the Medical Center determined that the four institutions each need between 300,000 and 500,000 square feet of additional research space.

The project would have 5,700 underground parking spaces.
McKeon said the campus would be open for all Houstonians.

This is very nice and futuristic....the only drawback to me is that its hospital development. Most people wont enjoy it or see it unless they are sick...or visiting someone thats sick....which causes people to not pay attention to it.

I completely disagree. There are a lot of people who visit Rice University to take pictures of the campus. People will flock to the TMC campus if it looks like the renderings. Not to mention there will be restaurants and bars.
