I might be getting a job in Amarillo and I've been looking at homes. I've read on here that you want to be as far southwest as possible but I found some nice, reasonable homes around the Tradewind airport that fit my budget but it's east of I-27 so I was wondering if any of you Amarillo natives could tell me about that area? Is it an okay place to raise a family?

SW Amarillo is kind of the "in" place to be, although there are other nice places in the city. Around the Tradewinds area is okay, but make sure and see exactly where the school lines are drawn. I am real hazy on that, but if you can get into Canyon ISD, at least your kids can hobnob with the kids from SW Amarillo.

Give it a good looking anyhow, and see if it would work for you. Personally I think it LOOKS like a nice area, but I don't know anyone who lives there.

Even though I'm not from Amarillo, I had a few friends that once lived in the city. The area around Tradewinds is not fully developed. Really, much of Amarillo's southeast side isn't even annexed into the city and is not densely populated at all. My recommendation is to stick with areas west of I-27.

I used to live in Tradewinds. The only reason that we don't live there now is cause we moved out of state. Now.. we are back in Amarillo and we really wanted to live in Tradewinds again, but they are pretty much all built out. So.. that should tell ya something.

Tradewinds is borderline. Housing ranges from mobile home park to low-end and starter homes. Schools nearby are so so. A little better area to consider would be City View (Loop 335 and Western).

I am biased since I live in far SW Amarillo, but it is one of the better parts of the city. You can still get a great house for around 200K, too.
