Hey everyone. I could use some advice...I have a approximately four acres in dickinson TX. This property has been in the family for over a hundred years and has been setting idle ever since. I am contemplating a move there in order to set up a self sufficient homestead and possibly a CSA. Can't find much on farming in this region. Is the soil, water availability and weather sufficient for a small scale operation? If so what crops are especially favorable?

I plan on modeling out a shipping container and going solar.

Thank you very much.

Sell it. Houston metro development will surround you if it hasn't already. Take that money and buy a bigger piece of land somewhere more ideal for you.

It does not rain in Texas some years.

That makes truck gardens an iffy proposition 4 years out of ten.

Add in hail and high winds and critters and its even more iffy.

Raising veggies is hard work. And the larger the planting the more work it is.
